IFHE CONGRESS
IFHE celebrates golden jubilee at 26thCongress
IFHE President Daniela Pedrini reflects on the 26th Congress that marked the 50th anniversary of the federation. Originally due to take place in Rome in May 2020, the 26th Congress was held online in January 2021.
The 26th IFHE Congress, which was held as an online event between 24-28 January 2021, was hosted by Italian healthcare engineering organisation SIAIS (Società Italiana dell’Architettura e dell’Ingegneria per la Sanità) and headlined ‘Global climate action in pandemic times – an unprecedented challenge’. The event saw attendees enjoy four inspiring and intense working days, learning about the latest and most promising approaches to healthcare engineering. More than 1,200 participants from over 60 countries discussed and learned about a broad range of topics, with a particular focus around climate change. One key element of the 26th Congress
was a collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), with a dedicated session that included contributions from key WHO speakers alongside the IFHE team about joint projects. The collaborations will continue with projects stretching across continents to find solutions for hospitals and healthcare structures. The experience of working with the
WHO last year was a great learning curve for the IFHE teams and we really look forward to continue making our contribution to this effort; enhancing and

deepening our relationship - especially now to serve those in need at this challenging time.
Looking back over 50 years of IFHE As a federation, IFHE was established in Rome in 1970. It started out with the objective for hospital engineers and technicians to share key information and working experiences and practices across cultures. The people around in 1970 could hardly imagine that 50 years later IFHE would have expanded so much, incorporating engineers, architects, technicians and health
experts around the world, extended into healthcare, collaborating with the WHO, facing twin global emergencies in climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. They could surely not have foreseen that IFHE and the technology covered could unite over 1,200 people spanning nearly 60 countries in an online setting – unprecedented in format and in numbers. We had a very special guest in engineer Gaetano Bettenzoli, who attended the first IFHE Congress in Rome in 1970. He had some interesting facts and anecdotes from the original Congress – it was amazing to have the opportunity to speak with one of the important members from the maiden event.

affect multiple populations within a hospital. Presentations on design included insights on AI, innovation, healing architecture, operating theatre spaces, plus case studies on art in hospitals, and post-occupancy evaluation of evidence- based designed intensive and intermediate care units.
