FACILITY UPGRADES

five or six o’clock every Friday, working through until the Monday morning, handing back the area clean and fully operational each time. Garth was always there for the handover to ensure that everything was OK.” The EDU is located above a recently

refurbished ward area, with some of the department’s pipework in the ward’s ceiling void. “It was a big challenge to isolate the pipework,” said Sayandan. “We had to ensure that the ward could continue to operate. Garth froze the valve, which enabled the team to go ahead with the work. “There were drains to each sink.

I wanted these to be removed to have one point of entry. Garth modified the drains and the pipework so that we had one point of entry to take all the water away. The area is now easier to isolate. We can pressure test it too. “We had had issues with the

hospital’s pipework previously, with some manufacturers’ fittings failing. I recommended Viega press fittings for the scheme. Garth is an approved Viega installer. He installed the fittings and undertook the pressure and mechanical commissioning tests.” Sayandan continued: “We changed

four sinks and the storage cabinets. The original cabinets were wooden and were chipping. While the old sinks were height adjustable this facility had stopped working on two sinks. They were replaced with Neocare high quality, height adjustable sinks and stainless steel storage cabinets. I’ve used Neocare a number of times – their products are very good, well built, robust and have a superb finish. “We had to take down the ceilings in both the dirty and clean areas and create new ceilings. The floors in both areas were also replaced. These were curved up the side of the walls and the walls were clad in Altro Whiterock. We improved the lighting by installing Thorlux LEDs. We have these in most areas of the hospital. They’re daylight and energy saving.”

A cramped working environment did not stop progress.

Keep it clean A potential source of cross-contamination was a fire door, installed between the dirty and clean sides. “I spoke to the fire officer who agreed that it could be removed. This created more space. There are closers on the doors, which are now interlocked,” said Sayandan. “Pressure differentials are now in

accordance with best practice. There was only one pressure sensor previously which was incorrectly located. Now there are three different measurements, all in the correct locations: dirty, clean and the lobby. The dirty area is negative pressure

and the clean area and lobby are positive pressure. An independent ventilation company undertook some of the re-balancing. “We had a wooden pass-through

hatch, which was non-compliant. Garth removed that and replaced it with a Neocare pass-through hatch. A Neocare chemical storage cabinet was also installed. “There was no facility for storing

endoscope hub connectors. Now we have a Neocare Scope Tidy rack. Staff can clearly see which hub connectors are required and it allows the valves to drain properly. “We gave the area around the

endoscope washer-disinfectors a facelift. It’s all now easily cleanable. An electrical junction box is now boxed-in, so that there’s nowhere for dust to collect. All the work surfaces and storage areas are now stainless steel, so they’re also easy to clean.” Sayandan continued: “Garth and his

team are now doing routine work in the sterile services department - they’re doing the weekly tests for the washer- disinfectors and steam sterilisers.” As project manager, SSD director Garth Rowbottom oversaw the work of the trust’s appointed contractors for various aspects of the scheme. The standard of cleanliness achieved

was so impressive that the mobilisation manager of the trust’s contract cleaner said they were unaware that the refurbishment scheme was underway. “The area was left so clean and tidy. Overall, Garth’s team kept their work self-contained. The builder’s clean was to

Each late Friday afternoon the department was made available for the upgrade; it was then handed back – fully functional – to the users at 7.30 am each Monday morning
