Low-cost modernisation: a focus on user wellbeing
Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF), created in 1978, is Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) flagship medical institution. This article explains how the hospital has been retrofitted to bring a more human feeling of welcoming to users in a modernist architecture building while maintaining the original project design
The Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF) ambulatory and access renovation project was developed throughout 2020, and between the years of 2020 and 2021, both hospital ambulatory floors were readjusted and renovated. The project encompassed the main and the side accesses, the creation of a public bathroom hall and administrative areas, and both ambulatory floors of the two floors of the clinic, including 128 offices. During 2020 and the beginning of
2021, the refurbishment and renovation works were carried out on the two floors
Katia Fugazza

of the clinic. The renovation works on the façade and accesses, as well as on the other areas, have not yet started. A large part of the hospital’s
infrastructure dates back to its inauguration and was found to have precarious installations. The premises were outdated and degraded and in need of reorganisation of the physical space.1 The project focused on service and work quality, building facility reform and its adherence to current legislation. The physical survey had been provided
by the hospital administration and, from it, the requirements were established
together with the nursing staff and the heads of each sector and the ambulatory. The premises were structured in accordance with the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) RCD number 50 from February 21 2002, which concerns legislation and hospital specialty demands. Taking into account contemporary
