COVER STORY
the ATICS design is the incorporation of permanent self-testing across all critical components, which is a key differentiator over other systems on the market that are susceptible to failure without prior warning.
As a further measure of its reliability and functional safety, ATICS is the only medical auto-changeover device that has been independently certified as fully compliant with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2 parts 1-3.
Residual current monitoring Bender UK’s residual current monitoring (RCM) system adds an extra dimension to the resilience of the new wing by providing live data on the status of the non-critical electrical system within the new operating theatre complex. Theatre lighting has its own UPS battery back-up system, but the general electrical supply is important to ensure the safety and well- being of patients and the continued operation of patient facilities. The RCM system was previously trialled in the main building. RCM identifies issues at a pre-critical stage and enables predictive and preventive maintenance, avoiding power outages. The extensive data provided by the RCM modules is routed through Bender’s POWERSCOUT reporting software. The permanent monitoring provided by
POWERSCOUT gives facilities managers an accurate real-time picture of the entire data for single or multiple site locations, delivering information they need direct to desktop or mobile devices, with measured values automatically and continuously saved.

system without switch-off and is designed to fulfil the requirements of IEC 60364-6, i.e. periodic verification of low-voltage electrical installations. At the same time, POWERSCOUT
enables facilities managers to track and manage energy use more effectively. The recorded data from devices allows users to compare the power system performance of different buildings or facilities.
Kimp adds: “Power availability and
effective management of energy usage are critical elements in running our site which operates 24/7. We cannot afford unplanned power outages and seek to minimise shutdowns required for statutory checks and inspection because of the disruption caused to patient care and the planned schedule of operations, procedures and day clinics.” Introducing continuous residual current
monitoring adds another dimension to power resilience provision that has been
welcomed by the estates management team. Kimp continues: “Our estates team has already seen the benefits of the data provided by continuous monitoring and I believe this technology will shape the way that support is provided in the future. Knowledge is power and enables you to make strategic decisions rather than simply react to circumstances as they arise. “The RCM continuous monitoring
and POWERSCOUT data management introduces the opportunity to satisfy the insulation resistance test without downtime on the electrical system, which is a huge benefit. It avoids the disruption that is the inevitable outcome of powering down electrical circuits and provides real- time data on the health of the electrical system.”
Bender UK has provided on-going
support to help the estates team to gain maximum benefit from the new integrated theatres and power provision technology both in day-to-day operation and the planned expansion of the facilities. We take pride in being able to
introduce our healthcare clients to the latest technology and to ensure that our organisation has the technical knowhow and expertise to deliver the service and support they require. Digitally-enabled hospitals are the
future and Bender’s continued investment in software-based technologies means that we are perfectly placed to influence and drive the necessary change across the healthcare industry.
