HUGG operates on a constant 24-hour basis, with a relay of doctors, nurses and cleaning staff. The refectory is used for breakfast from 06:00 to 08:00; lunch from 12:00 to 14:00 and dinner from 18:00 to 20:00, always in a shift scheme, attending to the staff and companions. There is no emergency care in HUGG, however ambulances circulate from 06:00 to 18:00, transferring users in need to other health institutions. The ward has the following coatings:
vinyl blanket on the floor and skirting board, walls and ceiling painted with latex paint in white colour, wooden frames painted with acrylic paint in white colour, partitions between beds coated with decorative laminate in white colour and curtain in waterproof fabric in white colour.
Data collection Two visits were made in September 2018, one in the afternoon and the other during lunch time, when the main entrance to the urology ward on the second floor was made. We observed plans of

Noise level measurement As it is a hospital environment, it was not possible to remove the patients and close all the windows. However, the unit where the measurements of sound pressure levels occurred was set up in a configuration, and vacant, area in line with national guidelines (NBR 10152:2017, p9). The measurements of the sound
pressure level occurred at two different
points in the cubicle. The evaluations were performed based on measurements of the levels of sound pressure equivalent, at the times close to lunch in the afternoon shift, in a total of five measurements lasting five minutes each. The equipment used was the Instrutemp ITDEP-4080 sound gauge. The sonometer was positioned at point 1 (near the bed) and at point 2 (near the window), in two situations: Rooms occupied with long-stay and nursing users, open windows, during and after lunch time, with the measurement time of 5 minutes at each point (see Fig 4). In order to replicate experienced sound
levels realistically, the measurement was performed with the sonometer placed at the point where a patient is lying in bed – at head level - with the use of a one-metre high tripod (P1) (see Fig 5). The measurement of point
P2 was performed with the aid of the tripod that was positioned on the bed, with the sonometer directed to the noise source at a height of 2.1 metres.
