SPOTLIGHT ON A

MARK FURMAGE Decontamination Technical Platform member

fter leaving school at 16, Mark Furmage started his career within NHS Wales as an Apprentice Mechanical Craftsperson in September 1990, employed by Mid Glamorgan Health Authority Estates

Department, based at East Glamorgan Hospital in Pontypridd. After completion of his apprenticeship, Mark worked as a Maintenance Craftsperson, maintaining hospital systems and becoming a Competent Person in a number of disciplines, such as Decontamination and MGPS. Mark attended various decontamination test person courses at Eastwood Park over a number of years, and performed periodic testing on decontamination equipment, alongside other duties, such as industrial laundry equipment maintenance. As Mark progressed through his Estates Management career, he performed roles as Estates Supervisor for Cwm Taf Health Board, where he was appointed as an Authorised Person for Decontamination. Here, the management of decontamination services provided valuable experience on Mark’s journey to becoming an AE (D). During early 2015, he was part of a project management group which delivered the Royal Glamorgan HSDU-managed centralised endoscope decontamination unit, working with John Prendergast, NWSSP Specialist Estates Services’ Principal Decontamination Engineer AE (D). Almost a decade on, the endoscope decontamination unit is still regarded as an exemplar endoscope decontamination unit, which has just successfully replaced its existing five twin-chamber endoscope washer-disinfectors while maintaining service provision and adding an additional machine. Mark moved to Aneurin Bevan University Health Board as Operational Maintenance Manager in a community hospital, where – as he puts it – he ‘learnt that moving out of your comfort zone into a new working environment accelerates career growth and development’. The role enabled Mark to develop management and people skills. In 2016, Mark joined NWSSP Specialist Estates Services, working within the Decontamination team performing annual validation on decontamination equipment across NHS Wales. Mark says: ‘My time at NWSSP SES was invaluable to where I find myself today.” Of working on a number of Welsh Government Decontamination surveys and capital projects across Wales, with the AE (D) for NHS Wales, he says, “I was fortunate within my role to have an excellent mentor in John Prendergast, who always pushed me to fulfil the maximum of my potential.”
