Population

With a population of around 60 million this number is expected to reach between 65 and 67 million by 2030.

Political and Economic Outlook

In July, riots broke out in several parts of South Africa during which 300 people died. South Africa is caught in its longest downward cycle since World War II. In the second quarter of 2021, South Africa's unemployment rate rose to a record high of 34.4 per cent. While South Africa’s recovery quickened in the second quarter, the economy is the only one among the G20 group of countries

that will not achieve pre-Covid-19 levels of growth before 2022.

Sports Betting Regulation

Licensed bookmakers are located in all the provinces throughout the Republic. In the totalisator sector there are around 380 totalisator outlets, 290 bookmakers and over 600 bookmaker outlets. Online casino gaming is expressly prohibited under the country’s current gambling regulations. Any online sportsbooks must be licensed by one of the provinces through a licensed bookmaker.

South Africa has been hit particularly hard by Covid-19. In September 2020, South Africa’s National Gambling Board (NGB) responded to discussions about

Te National Gambling Amendment Act, 2008 (“the Amendment Act”), which was passed by the National Assembly and assented to by the Presidency on 10 July 2008, never came into operation. Consequently, interactive gambling, as envisaged in the Amendment Act of 2008, remains prohibited.

the legality of online casino with a firm declaration that it was not permitted.

The regulator claimed that the question of legality is “subject of debate in some circles” – but pointed out that sports betting is the only product permitted online. Major land-based operators had begun to discuss the potential benefits online casinos would have in order to get them through the current crisis.

In a media statement the NGB said: “To eliminate any uncertainty in this regard, the NGB wishes to make it emphatically clear that the answer to whether online or interactive gambling is legal in South Africa is a simple and unequivocal NO with the exception of online sports betting.”
