Te collection of sports data and statistics for betting and gaming is being challenged under Article 4 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), by hundreds of UK footballers. Te legal action, if successful, could affect the way in information is classified and significantly change the cost of scraping such data from public sources and is likely to spread from football to all major sports.
Te proliferation of sports data gathering means that analytics companies now track 5,000 plus datapoint per football match, and has become a multi-billion industry in the gathering and dissemination of player data. 850 players in the UK have now launched a claim for compensation for the trade in their performance data over the past six years (the statutory limit under UK law), stating that companies like Genius Sports, Sportradar, Opta and Statbomb etc. need players’ consent and should be paying for the privilege.
GDPR has very strict rules about controlling and processing sensitive areas of data and the legal fight will centre around what constitutes private
Blueprint strengthens market presence with Holland Casino
Te Netherlands
Blueprint Gaming has enhanced its presence in the newly regulated online Dutch market after launching its range of immersive games with Holland Casino, while ensuring the highest standards of safer and responsible gambling.
Blueprint’s portfolio of slot games feature prominently within the government-owned casino’s new online offering, with branded games such as Te Goonies now live, as well as the developer’s range of Megaways titles.
Holland Casino is set to improve its online platform with the addition of Blueprint’s Jackpot King games over the coming months, which utilise the developer’s progressive jackpot system that offers huge win potential with every spin.
data as opposed to what is publicly available fact. A report from the BBC claims that 17 major betting, entertainment and data collection firms have been targeted by the legal action, which has also highlighted 150 further targets it believes has misused player data.
Under Article 4 of the GDPR, “personal data” refers to a range or identifiable information, such as physical attributes, location data or physiological information. If GDPR legislation can be applied to the gathering of player statistics, some players could be due tens of thousands of pounds in compensation. However, the argument that performance data is protected by data privacy is largely untested. Te claim needs to establish whether such data as how many goals a player has scored, passes completed, ground covered in a match, is public domain or personal data regulated by GDPR.
Te body bringing the claim, Global Sports Data and Technology, states that performance data isn’t just about lost revenues. Footballers are now accessed using this data, which can make and break careers.
Jeroen Verkroost, Digital Transformation Director at Holland Casino, said: “Te Blueprint brand holds a prestigious reputation within the retail and online industry, and we had no hesitation in deploying its games for our digital platform.
“Tis is an exciting period for everyone connected with Holland Casino. With Blueprint’s iGaming content now available, we are confident of attracting many new players.”
Ryan Collinge at Blueprint commented on the deal: “By working together with Holland Casino, we are in a strong position to reach a wider audience and bring players unique moments in slots entertainment.
“We are looking forward to working with the team at Holland Casino and providing them with exciting new content that raises excitement among its player base.”

Dutch Gaming Authority Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has confirmed it is carrying out checks at slot machine arcades this month to make sure they comply with the new registration obligations.
Since April 1, 2021, slot machine arcades have been obliged to record data about possible excessive participation and about interventions in gaming behaviour. From October 1, 2021, they must also record the visiting frequency of players.
Te KSA said: “Te new registration obligations are an important condition for analysing player behaviour. Tey arise from the legal obligation of the Remote Gambling Act (Koa), which entered into force on April 1 2021. Te law not only legalises the online gambling market, but also imposes new requirements on country-specific providers in the field of addiction prevention and advertising.”
