A few months back we ran a feature looking at the phenomenon that is Slot Streamers - players that stream their play of slot machines to a live audience. Watching someone play a game is puzzling for many people, but in the era of massive audience figures for esports, the fact that this is a rapidly growing channel isn’t too surprising.


Slot developers have caught on quickly and have sought to build relationships with streamers who talk directly to the players. They describe the game in detail, explain the jackpots and bonuses from the prespective of the player and engage one-to- one with the audience through chat. It’s a compelling B2C proposition.


Two things have crept into the streaming side recently that raise a red flag. The first being the donation of viewers to the streamers, who use the funds to gamble and place bets. That streamers ask for donations to continue playing makes for uncomfortable watching, but far more complicated is the admittance of several streamers that they’ve become gambling addicts.


FAR MORE COMPLICATED IS THE ADMITTANCE OF SEVERAL STREAMERS THAT THEY’VE BECOME GAMBLING ADDICTS.


Having written about videogames for several years, the pinnacle of a videogame’s success was to say that it’s so good - it’s addictive. Watching Twitch players play videogames for 16 hours straight is unhealthy, worrying and the cause of many parental tirades. But for slot streamers to do the same - chasing audience figures through compulsively playing slots is a new issue - and a problem that could hit mainstream news channels all too soon.


There are instances of slot streamers turning from the camera and appearing to take drugs in order to extend their play session - with the chat going into a frenzy of speculation about addiction and compulsive behaviour. Gambling is entertaining if there are boundaries and limits - but to force yourself to play in front of a live audience each and every day... this feels like a lab experiment playing out on my desktop.
