Tere are 33 such approved establishments, meaning the casino count could rise to 65 in the 3,
300sq.km territory once these projects are completed. Gaming halls must now have at least 10 gaming tables and 100 slots. Licensing fees are €650,000 with €3,500 for each additional game table (over 10) and €700 for each slot machine (over 100). Casinos are not permitted in city centres, whilst the minimum
distance from schools has been reduced from 500m to 100m. Previously, not more than five casinos could hold preliminary permits (which could then be changed into full licences) at any given time and this cap has now been lifted. Penalties have also been lowered. Players must be aged 25

graded and now the operators face a €1,000 fine whilst customers face only a civil offence punishable with a €50 fine (previously €1,000 and two years' prison sentence). Te decision has been pushed by the right-wing National Unity Party (UBP) headed by Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoglu, who has been in office since the end of 2021. Te centre-left opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) fought against the new law, saying that despite the contributions the casino hotels bring to the economy, they could see an increase in serious social problems, such as gambling addictions, and an increase in criminal activities, whilst the lower penalty will also see a rise in locals gambling.
