From Legacy Machines to Manufacturing Intelligence

By Jennifer Davis, Head of Marketing and Communications; Andrew Scheuermann, CEO; and Tim Burke, CTO, Arch Systems, Inc.

A

global manufacturing and supply chain services part- ner, Flex® supports a di -

verse range of industries. With 15,000 machines spread across more than 100 sites, the stagger- ing complexity of its manufactur- ing requires trustworthy, real- time KPIs to drive improvement. To do this, Flex sought to

implement an enterprise-scale data automation project. Flex partnered with Arch

Systems to extract data from new and existing machines, cre- ating a universal solution pow- ered by standardized data. Successful implementation of the solution enabled real-time dash- boards, global KPIs, custom reports, and advanced analytics, leading Flex to significant uti- lization and productivity gains and ROI across its entire organi- zation.

Untapped Data For a company of Flex’s size,

standardized key performance indicators (KPIs) are indispensa- ble. Flex knew it needed KPIs to manage complex global opera- tions for a wide variety of tactical

and strategic reasons. High- value assets, like those used in surface mount technology (SMT), account for millions of dollars in

insights allowing it to do so were hidden in untapped complex machine data. With individual sites implementing local, cus-

increase day-to-day operational efficiency. Strategically, the com- pany wanted to increase long- term machine capacity utiliza- tion and knew the advanced

tomized solutions to get data, Flex recognized the need to con- solidate into a single global solu- tion that worked at every site.

Machine Connectors: Flex deployed hardware or software connectors from Arch to hetero- geneous machines. For SMT machines, these were largely pure software connectors focus- ing initially on integrating ASM, Fuji and Panasonic pick-and- place machines and moving next to ViTrox and Koh Young inspec- tion machines. For Mechanicals machines, Arch’s IOTile hard- ware would be used to extract machine data to be standardized at the broker.

Data Broker: Arch and Flex deployed three centrally-man- aged regional data brokers; one in the Americas, one in Europe, and one in Asia. This provided a scal- able IT environment to reach all factories, supporting real-time dashboards, custom reports, and global KPIs.
