MS: More and more customers are looking at their digitization strategies and moving towards Industry 4.0. What’s driving this trend and how can ASM help?
JT: Industry 4.0 is a journey, not a destina- tion. Manufacturers of all sizes — even those that may think they can’t afford Industry 4.0 — must adopt its methodologies and tools if they want to be competitive. It’s all about productivity and doing
more with less. Ultimately, if we are going to level the playing field in terms of manufac- turing cost across geographies, automation is the solution to that equation. ASM has been anticipating and investing in this for decades. Self-learning systems like
ProcessExpert, for example, asset utilization and human resource deployment through Command Center, the platform of MES systems, and the compre- hensive line-level software man- agement of ASM Works — all of these types of technologies are driving efficiency and manufac- turers of any size can benefit.
MS: What do you see as the pri- mary market drivers for electronics manufacturing in the Americas? How is ASM enabling customers to capitalize on growth sectors?
JT: Across all geographies, 5G implementation is spurring huge growth. The automotive space, and specifically electric vehicles (EVs), is also seeing massive expansion. Honestly, EVs is one of

the single largest growth drivers I’ve witnessed in my 37 years in the electronics industry. Of course, the semiconductor short- age is impacting auto production in the short term so it will be painful for the next 12 to 18 months, but long-term the vehicle sector is solid. For the Americas, the reshoring of business to build more resilience into the supply chain is also contributing to devel- opment in this region and, for that reason, I see the Americas market as more influential for the foresee- able future.
MS: What’s a general overview of ASM’s product development roadmap through the end of this year and into next?
JT: Everything we are develop- ing, regardless of the product, is about doing more with less; rais- ing output, decreasing floor space, reducing cost and increas- ing integration for tighter control and superior quality. Whether it’s software or
hardware tools, all development is focused on reducing the cost of manufacturing and leveling the playing field so that low-cost geographies don’t influence the
