All of this is tak- ing place during a digital revolution, providing the most disruptive time possible for established industries. Some of the world’s most valu-


able companies, such as Uber and Airbnb, are digital companies that leverage smart technology and smartphones to monetize underuti- lized resources, such as a vehicle or a spare room. These are headline ex- amples of the disruptive nature of the digital revolution. Others include smart packaging that can tell the customer if the products inside have been tampered with or stored incor- rectly, smart-home hubs or personal assistants that support everyday liv- ing, and smart health solutions that allow patients great independence in managing illnesses. As consumers get smarter, their


products are required to do the same. It is essential that the entire manu- facturing industry and supply chain follow suit. The EMS industry is em- bracing the mantra of “smart is the new sexy,” as those who are the biggest and cheapest, now scramble to become the smartest. r
