SHOW GUIDE
CONNECTED CLEANING
Kärcher will unveil its new ‘Connected Cleaning’ concept at ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam. Shortlisted for the Innovation Award, the system takes the ‘Internet of Things’ and applies it to cleaning machines and services, creating a fully interconnected system. Here, Kärcher tell us more about the concept.
At this year’s ISSA/Interclean trade fair in Amsterdam, on a trade stand the size of nine tennis courts, alongside 125 cleaning machines from its unrivalled product range, Kärcher will be launching Connected Cleaning. This concept for networked cleaning from Kärcher has been shortlisted as a finalist for the show’s prestigious Innovation Award.
Networking and digitalisation are permeating every area of our lives, changing our culture, society and economy. Against this backdrop, we believe we will all face new challenges in the future, with cleaning requirements increasingly affected by urbanisation, demographic change and rising energy use: a growing population, and therefore growing scarcity of living space, place considerable demands on cleaning. High hygiene standards are becoming necessary in order to prevent outbreaks of diseases and epidemics. An ageing population is also demanding a rethink in workforce deployment. This and other issues will have to be taken into account for future cleaning and new tailor-made models for using cleaning machines will have to be developed.
Numerous possibilities for intelligent applications are emerging, like using data for needs-based cleaning of buildings, floors, streets or facades. Cleaning must in future be seen as a
system in which cleaning machines communicate with each other, plan their needs autonomously, use cleaning agents efficiently and digitally process their tasks. This will allow capacities, both of machines and personnel, to be utilised more effectively, which with regard to demographic developments must be taken into account for cleaning processes in future. The cleaning industry will change significantly over the next five years and will increasingly network cleaning machines with buildings and IT platforms.
Laying the foundation for optimisation and efficiency enhancements in cleaning contractors’ daily routines, Kärcher has brought together its Fleet Management programme and Eco!Manager software for tracking manual cleaning in a single online platform to organise facility management services. This creates a comprehensive, transparent overview which allows operators to plan and deploy their resources more efficiently. The product range is being continuously developed and expanded with new modules.
In the future, cleaning processes will be more interconnected in order to make workflows more efficient. Buildings and machines will be able to communicate with each other; they will register statuses and then initiate cleaning processes accordingly

– without human intervention. The Internet of Things, intelligent sensors and information systems will play an important role in this. They will provide information, for example, on whether streets are dirty or the locations where wastepaper bins need to be emptied. Communication between rooms and cleaning machines will also be possible: the floor covering will communicate with the cleaning machines via sensors as to the level of dirt. Once the collected data has been evaluated, a cleaning process will be initiated accordingly. Drones will also be used to organise cleaning more effectively in future. With the help of these mini robots, it will be possible to gather data so that cleaning can be adapted as required.
As a global market leader for cleaning technology, it is part of Kärcher's identity to continue to invest in research and development. To meet tomorrow's cleaning challenges also means taking the needs of everyone involved into account in order to effectively develop cleaning technologies for the future.
