10 QUESTIONS WITH... PHILIP MORRISH

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Philip Morrish, Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners.

Q5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING

Q1 Q2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Shop assistant with John Lewis, it was a Saturday and holiday job.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

My connection with the environmental cleaning industries arose from my City role as an industry and company analyst when I was ranked number one for both the UK chemical and waste management sectors; highly unusual because most analysts do not get voted number one in one sector let alone two!

Q3 Q4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR

PERSONALITY? The best way to describe me is ‘never stops learning’ but that is not what you want as an answer, so try – enthusiastic, thoughtful, and caring.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,

WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? This is a tough question because I have been privileged to visit many countries. Restricting it to one place, I would like to revisit Japan to explore the country and understand better their history and culture, which is as rich as ours.

INDUSTRY? I joined the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners to improve the professional recognition of the environmental cleaning industries, whose breadth of activities affects our environments and us all. Currently, our Livery Company is actively working on several initiatives that, over time, should improve the public’s recognition of the importance of the industry, further raise the levels of professionalism, and establish it as a career of first choice.

Q6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? My partner Angie and I have four children between us, who are either in tertiary education or starting to build their careers so this is a pertinent question for us. We have said to each of them that whatever industry they choose for their career, they should enjoy what they do, be professional and aim to be the best. I would say the same to an intern.

Q7

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I would invest it into my next venture, a FinTech, but that does not mean my passion for the environmental cleaning industries is fading, far from it.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE

ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Leonardo da Vinci. They are all visionaries who are passionate about changing society for the better. It would be fascinating to listen to them challenging each other,

while sparking ideas off each other; they might even create something amazing through their discussions.

Q9

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? My futurist prediction as we progress further into the 4th Industrial Revolution is no fundamental shake- up but a continuum of evolutionary change. Yes, smart buildings, smart devices and robotics will have an increasing influence upon some aspects of the more mundane industrial and commercial cleaning processes but the principal drivers will remain – can the job be done for less cost, in less time, less intrusively and produce a better result? The technical and regulatory demands upon the industry will continue increasing and employers will need to ensure that all their employees remain suitably qualified and receive continuous training support.

Giles Wheeler, Operations Director at Facilicom, asks:

Q10

IF YOU COULD GO TO ANY PERIOD OF TIME WHERE

WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? This is a difficult question to answer because for most periods in history you would not really want to go unless you were wealthy or had influence. So I would choose the 60s because it was a period of energetic change driven by hope, emerging opportunities and a crumbling of social barriers. That change is still reverberating today as each subsequent generation builds, reinforces, and enhances those changes. Also, the music wasn’t too bad!
