WORKSHOPPING ORDER OUT OF CHAOS


Many workshops give an impression of disorder – particularly when surfaces are cluttered with tools, components and rags. Here, Tork offers tips for de-cluttering the industrial environment in a bid to improve productivity.


The traditional industrial workshop is a notoriously untidy environment. Surfaces tend to be littered with rags, tools, components and other materials while spills of oil and cutting fluid may go unnoticed on the floor.


This is obviously not an ideal scenario. A disordered workshop creates an unprofessional image while also being inefficient since it means equipment will be difficult to find in a hurry. Meanwhile, unattended spills and abandoned rags may become a health issue since spills can lead to trips and falls while solvent-soaked textiles may pollute the atmosphere.

Luckily, a growing number of industrial managers are recognising the drawbacks of an untidy work space and are turning instead to an eastern model in a bid to change their practices.


The Japanese 5S principle sets out five fundamental steps for organising a work space in order to improve safety, efficiency and staff morale. These steps are: Sorting; Setting in order; Shining; Standardising; and Sustaining.


“Sorting” involves removing all but the most essential of items from the workplace in order to allow operatives to quickly locate the equipment they need and when they need it.
