While the men’s room discussed earlier had a total of eight fixtures, an industrial washroom may have as many as 30 fixtures. Even if two or more workers are cleaning the washroom, this can take a lot of time, causing worker fatigue, muscle strain, require cleaning workers to change cleaning supplies frequently, which slows the entire cleaning process down.


SETTING THE PACE When it comes to speeding up industrial washroom cleaning, we must remember that we cannot sacrifice quality for speed. If quality goes down, all our efforts will be in vain. So we have two options before us:


Develop a process. Some washroom cleaning systems take a work backward, top/down approach. Cleaning begins at the far end of the washroom with the cleaning worker moving toward the doorway. High areas are cleaned first and then lower areas.


If a traditional cleaning method is applied, all counters and fixtures are to be sprayed first with a cleaning solution and then wiped. Because

we are dealing with grease and oil, it might be best to give the cleaning solution more time to work. While this does increase the amount of time spent, it’s better than going back and cleaning areas a second time. The job is finished by removing trash, grabbing a broom, a mop, filling a mop bucket, and cleaning the floor.


Equipment selection. Earlier we mentioned that ISSA reports that no- touch cleaning can reduce restroom cleaning times by about two-thirds. The same cleaning process just described can be applied with no-


touch cleaning equipment. But instead of sprayers and rags, the worker uses the machine to apply the cleaning solution to all surfaces and fixtures including the floor, works backward toward the door and from top to bottom. The operator returns to the rear of the washroom, and now power rinses all the same areas.


Usually, the power rinse will remove grease and oil, so there is no waiting for the cleaning solution to do the job. The floor is then cleaned the same way, no mopping is necessary. All moisture and soils rinse down floor drains and can also be vacuumed up by the machine to speed up the process.


As to effectiveness, studies published by Dr. Jay Glasel, a US scientist, indicated that no-touch cleaning: “is as much as 60 times more effective in reducing bacterial contamination than conventional [cleaning] methods for typical commercial floors.”


We can assume this applies to the cleaning of restroom fixtures and other surfaces as well.
