THE CHALLENGE OF THE INDUSTRIAL WASHROOM

Marc Ferguson, International Business Development Manager for Kaivac, developers of the No-Touch Cleaning and OmniFlex Crossover Cleaning systems, discusses methods of saving time cleaning industrial washrooms without sacrificing quality.

ISSA, the worldwide cleaning association, has been publishing Cleaning Times for about two decades. Every few years, the booklet is updated as new cleaning technologies and methods are introduced.

Still, one thing that has remained the same over the years is the time it takes to clean washrooms. From the beginning, Cleaning Times has estimated that the approximate time required to clean a restroom is based on the number of fixtures, about three minutes per fixture. This typically includes the fixtures, floors, and trash collection using a traditional spray surfaces/wipe surfaces cleaning method.

36 | INDUSTRIAL CLEANING

So, if a men’s washroom has two toilets, three urinals, and three sinks, we’re looking at about 24 minutes to clean the restroom. Tack on another 10 minutes to clean mirrors, high and low surfaces, high touch areas, etc., bringing our cleaning time up to 34 minutes.

But ISSA says these times can be cut by about two-thirds if a spray-and- vac or no-touch cleaning system is employed. Instead of 34 minutes, we are looking at about 10. While this method does not include trash pickup, using the no-touch system does include clearing mirrors, high-and low surface cleaning, most high touch areas, as well as the floors.

However, these studies assume the washroom is in an office building or

even a school. Things can be quite different in an industrial location. For one thing, industrial washrooms often get more soiled, and a great deal of this soil is harder to remove, like grease and oil tracked in on workers’ hands and shoe bottoms.

And now that many economies in Western Europe are doing well, some industrial locations are open extended hours or even 24 hours. This makes cleaning restrooms all the more difficult.

Plus, there is one more thing we must point out that makes cleaning an industrial washroom far different from cleaning the common washroom. That is the number of fixtures.
