Healthcare Scientists

Our Healthcare Scientists help prevent, diagnose and treat disease using their expertise, scientific and clinical knowledge and technical skills, working in many areas of the Trust including Audiology, Cardiology, Imaging, Medical Physics and Pathology. Their work underpins >80% of all patient diagnoses.

We develop and support our scientists at graduate entry level through the

nationally funded graduate entry Scientific Training Programme (STP), professional qualifications and with on-going internal professional development.

In 2017/18 we have supported:

A case study

Stephen Kidd Clinical Scientist, Microbiology

Stephen qualified as clinical scientist in Microbiology following

the NHS Scientific Training Programme (STP). Stephen reflects on the experience:

“My STP training was a very tough but rewarding three years of academic and work based learning. I was lucky enough

to have the opportunity to do two tours of Sierra Leone during the Ebolavirus outbreak as a team leader, present at three international

infectious disease conferences and have my elective at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.” Reflecting on the support he has received from the trust Stephen says:

4 staff on the national (STP) programme.

8 healthcare scientists studying for the

Institute of Biomedical Science Specialist (IBMS) Diploma

1 support staff completing the

Foundation Degree in healthcare at Southampton Solent University

Future plans

We will work with our University partners to develop undergraduate and post graduate apprenticeships to “grow our own” scientists.

“I have been very well supported and resourced by Microbiology at HHFT with particular thanks

to my clinical supervisor Dr Nick Cortes. I now have a full time role

as a Clinical Scientist where I’m molecular diagnostics and point of care testing lead for Microbiology and I’m being supported towards taking my FRCPath Part 1 exam in September.”
