Enhancing careers Pharmacy

Developing for the future

The pharmacy workforce is ever evolving and this brings new opportunities but also complexities to our workforce. As new roles for clinical pharmacy within GP practice, primary care and care homes emerge; we are at risk of losing our trained Pharmacists to these new roles.

Alongside the workforce challenges, our patient population is ageing and many have multiple long-term conditions, making their pharmaceutical requirements complex.

Our pharmacy teams are using innovative and resourceful ways to support new and enhanced roles, whilst having a positive impact on patient care:

In 2017/18, achievements include:

• Our Trainee Nursing Associates and Associate Practitioners are in training to safely administer medication to our patients.

• 13 pharmacists are now independent prescribers and most have established new clinics to support multi- disciplinary patient-centred care pathways.

• Development of a new Teacher Practitioner and apprenticeship roles.

Future plans

We will develop the role of the Medicines Management and Administration Technician to support ward-based team-working as well as apprenticeship pathways for pharmacy services assistant and pharmacy technician.
