These are just some of the features that are free to all exhibition visitors. But, what is the fee for entry to the exhibition? There isn’t one; it is also free. So, if you can be in Manchester at the very end of June, there should be plenty to entertain you.
An International Conference
The mmc2014 conference comprises four parallel sessions. They contain 24 symposia covering the life and physical sciences and embracing light, electron, confocal, and scanning probe microscopy.
Whether you choose to attend for one, two or three days, the conference provides the perfect opportunity to see and hear about the newest techniques and applications. It also provides excellent opportunities to network and to kick-start collaborations.
The Right Image...or Video
The RMS International Scientific Imaging Competition has new features this year. For the first time it includes a separate category for SPM, and entrants can now submit video clips. As usual, there are some amazing prizes, and the winners will be announced during mmc2014.
The exhibition is free to all visitors and allows you to sit down with manufacturers and suppliers to discuss your needs face to face.
A Unique Training Opportunity
Have you ever been on a training course that suits most of your needs but doesn’t quite address the unique challenges that you face? The RMS Learning Zone first appeared in 2004 and has been a popular feature ever since. It is designed to allow you to specify your own mini training course to help you to get the answers that will improve your skills with the microscope. The zone is kitted out with equipment that allows skilled staff to demonstrate generic (rather than manufacturer/machine specific) solutions and answers, so that you can go away with new skills and increased knowledge. Just turn up. An expert will be on hand and you can get started. Attendance certificates can be provided for those wishing to add to their training portfolios.
The lecture theatres at Manchester Central are spacious and well-equipped, and mmc2014 brings with it a unique inclusive atmosphere.
Retail Therapy for Microscopists
Someone once described the Microscience exhibition as “retail therapy for microscopists”. It certainly provides the perfect environment for window shopping. Whilst you can’t quite compare products side-by-side, it’s as close as you will ever get. You could sit down with one manufacturer and get hands-on exposure to state of the art equipment, and then stroll to another stand and see how a competitor solves the same problem. It really is an unequalled opportunity to come with a set of requirements and, within a few hours, see which manufacturer or supplier can best-meet your needs.
Registration
Delegates can register for one-, two- or three-days with fees starting at £25 for student members of the RMS. And, it is still not too late to submit a late-breaking poster abstract – the deadline is 30th May. And, don’t forget, you don’t need to attend the conference to visit the exhibition. You can register in advance to be kept up to date with developments, or you can just turn-up on the day. Entry is free.

Upcoming RMS Events
Digital Image Processing Workshop June 6th, London
Scientific Organiser: Justin Molloy
Modern light microscopy is highly quantitative and involves collection, storage and analysis of digital images. The recent revolution in domestic digital imaging means that many people are now familiar with digital imaging and some will have experience of basic image processing and image manipulation.
This one-day RMS workshop meeting covers the underlying principles of digital image processing and enables the advanced user of light microscopy to make the very best use of their imaging data. The types of image vary from those of high spatial resolution obtained using confocal microscopy to lower resolution video and multidimensional data obtained using advanced optical techniques (like FRET, FRAP, multiphoton).
This workshop course consists of two lectures that introduce the basic concepts of digital image processing and image analysis. The main focus of the day is for delegates to participate in a hands-on, computer-based workshop in which digital image analysis will be learnt by example.
The small group, workshop format, will enable people to progress at their own pace and work through the basics of signal processing and data analysis using Excel spreadsheets and progressing to image processing and image analysis using ImageJ. The course will be supported by expert demonstrators.
The workshop aims to advance the understanding and use of digital image processing and image analysis tools and initiate a network of interactions between young UK researchers that will be mediated and supported by the Light Microscopy Section of the RMS.
Light Microscopy Summer School July 14, 2014 – July 16, 2014, York Scientific Organiser: Peter O’Toole (University of York)
The Light Microscopy summer school is an annual, residential three day course held at the University of York covering the principles of light microscopy. Participants are also trained in practical issues surrounding light microscopy. After introductory presentations, the course is taught predominantly through hands-on practical sessions.
The course is suitable for both novices and more experienced users wanting to gain a greater understanding of the microscope and feedback every year is always fantastic.. Students come from a range of backgrounds within both research and commercial organisations. All have benefited greatly from the Course and leave with increased understanding and skills.
The course is immediately followed by a two day hands-on Confocal Course - Getting the most from your Confocal and a one day Grain Sizing Course.
The registration fee includes: 3 nights en- suite accommodation (Sunday to Wednesday inclusive) on the pleasant University of Yorkcampus; All meals, including a welcome dinner on Sunday evening, the course dinner on the Tuesday evening at a restaurant in York, and lunch and daytime refreshments.
The LM Summer School has been awarded 23 CPD points from the Institute of Biomedical Science.
Registration for both events is now open. For details visit
