68 Particle Size Analyser for Small Particles and Biopharmaceuticals
Shimadzu presented its SALD-7500nano particle size analyser to the professional community during the analytica show. This powerful new tool is ideal for research and development in nanotechnology and life sciences. As the successor of the SALD-7101, the SALD- 7500nano is the latest product in Shimadzu’s particle size measurement series. It has been developed for highly sensitive and accurate measurement in the particle size range of nano to sub-micron regions. The system confi guration can be optimised to address various applications, purposes, measurement objects, environments and conditions.
The SALD-7500nano is aimed at the following target markets: evaluation of nanoparticles and nanomaterials – the instrumement is able to determine particle size distributions from 7 nm to 800 µm in concentrations from the sub ppm range to 20%; evaluation of aggregation properties in biopharmaceuticals - Aggregate Sizer, a specialised version of the instrument, evaluates aggregation properties of biopharmaceuticals. The Aggregate Sizer measures aggregates in the size range from 7 nm to 800 µm. Furthermore, aggregate concentrations in the sub-visible particle range (from 100 nm to 10 µm) can be evaluated quantitatively (in terms of µg/mL).
The SALD-7500nano covers the measurement range from 7 nm to 800 µm in a concentration range from 0.1 ppm to 20%. Sample amount required is just 5 mL (15 µL with accessories). The continuous measurement function allows real time monitoring while saving measurement data at 1s intervals.
Outstanding functions and features of the SALD-7500nano include built-in self-diagnostic functions for easy maintenance and the measurement assistant functions for preparation of SOPs (Standard Operation Procedures) to ensure that measurements are always performed using the same conditions and procedures. Automatic refractive index calculation function eliminates errors and problems in selection of refractive indices. The laser diffraction method complies with ISO 13320 and JIS Z 8825-1 and enables verifi cation of measurement result validity by referencing light intensity distribution data

High Performance Centrifuges Offer Advanced Networking and Multiuser Management
Avanti JXN-26 centrifuges from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences offer laboratories an intuitive interface and advanced data management features that expand functionality and fl exibility to free user time in research and bioproduction. The instruments can be run from an Apple iOS or Android device using MobileFuge, the only mobile application available to run and manage laboratory centrifuges.
Researchers and facilities managers can leverage the instrument’s data management, user tracking, networking and remote capabilities for ease-of-use and effi ciency in biological sample preparation, and to meet quality control standards. Safety, logistics and quality challenges in multiuser labs and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environments are met with software designed to improve daily operations across applications.
Network functions enable monitoring, diagnostic email, run-log archiving to network locations and printing to network printers. Fast, effi cient service and online help is available, and users can choose from nine operating languages. Scientists can create secure individual profi les and login to MobileFuge to track and manage centrifuge runs remotely.
Avanti JXN-26 provides application versatility, with wide rotor compatibility and capacities to 6 L, speeds to 26,000 rpm and rcf up to 81,700 xg. The rotor library is comprised of 26 options, including fi xed-angle and swinging-bucket models with lightweight designs that accommodate a variety of tubes, microplates and bottles. Continuous fl ow rotors are also supported. Automatic detection system prevents the centrifuge from being run at higher than rated speeds for installed rotor type.
Beckman Coulter centrifuges also bring energy savings and environmental advantages. Recycled resin is incorporated in the outer panelling of the JXN-26, and each instrument contains as much as 7.5 lbs. of recycled PET bottles. A Friction Reduction System (FRS) lets the Avanti JXN-26 run more effi ciently and quietly and increases energy effi ciency by reducing the air in the chamber, which in turn reduces rotor friction and thus the amount of work required to accelerate and to maintain speed.
A lower work surface makes rotor handling easier and a foot pedal on the centrifuge is used for hands-free lid opening. BioCertifi ed rotors, in conjunction with appropriate centrifuges and labware, are available for biosafety options. An optional pharmaceutical grade sterilising fi lter system, located on the unit exterior for ease of access, also enhances safety.
