Laboratory Products 39 Reaction Station and Overhead Stirring System increase throughput at Chinese Labs
As growing numbers of Chinese pharmaceutical companies increase their investment in drug discovery, the adoption of technology to increase their chemical synthesis throughput is growing fast. There has been considerable interest in the Radleys Tornado and Carousel 6 system, which offers controlled parallel heating and mechanical stirring of up to 6 x 250ml flask within a compact benchtop footprint.
Professor Chen Biqiang from the College of Life Science and Technology at the Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology recently invested in a Tornado system. He commented, “I am primarily engaged in the research of enzyme-catalysed synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acid glycerides and previously used a water bath and mechanical agitation to deal with a sample. However, we could only manage one sample at a time. Since using the Tornado system, which can process samples under vacuum and we can simultaneously carry out several reactions. This has greatly increased our work efficiency, and the Carousel 6 part of the system also offers parallel magnetic stirring as well.”
The Tornado system offers unrivalled stirring for both viscous samples and for the dispersion of delicate solids in solution. Tornado features include: single overhead stirrer used to stir all positions, simultaneously saving space and money; rapid and controlled heating to 180˚C with integral water cooled reflux head; accepts 50ml, 100ml and 250ml round bottom flasks; ‘Pinch-Grip’ mechanism allows easy, ‘tool-free’ stirrer shaft insertion; operates under an inert atmosphere; wide neck flasks with quick coupling for improved sealing and ease of use; 2-speed drive allows overhead stirrers with less torque to be used for higher viscosities; stir to 1000rpm in low viscosity solutions, maximum viscosity 10,000mPas at 500rpm.

Expanded Range of Imaging Systems
Scientific Digital Imaging’s [SDI’s] Syngene Division is delighted to introduce the new high sensitivity G:BOX Chemi XX6 and XX9 image analysis systems. Utilising the power of the latest CCD camera technology, these systems are suitable for scientists needing a versatile system capable of exceptional imaging of 1D and 2D gels, as well as chemi and fluorescent blots. The G:BOX Chemi XX6 and XX9 feature high resolution, high quantum efficiency (73% quantum efficiency at 425nm) low noise CCD cameras with the highest level (f0.95) auto-focus lens and 6 and 9 megapixel resolution respectively.
Since the cameras are cooled to -53oC, the XX9 and XX6 systems can generate excellent images of chemi blots with minimal background noise and the system’s large imaging areas (32.3cm x 25.6cm) also mean both systems are ideal for those scientists wanting to accurately image larger blots, as well as larger 1D and 2D gels. This new generation of G:BOX Chemi XX systems are designed for researchers looking for high performance imaging, as they can be fitted with a range of LED lighting and filter options making them suitable for fluorescence, chemi- luminescence, IR and 2D gel applications.
High Energy Ball Mill Revolutionises Ultrafine Grinding
High Energy Ball Mill Emax
The revolution in ultra- fine grinding: The new Emax achieves finer and faster grinding results than any other ball mill!
The Emax is an entirely new type of ball mill for high energy milling. The unique combination of high friction and impact results in extremely fine particles within the shortest amount of time. The high energy input is a result of an unrivalled speed of 2000 min-1
and the innovative jar design. Thanks to the
revolutionary water cooling system, the high energy input is effectively used for the grinding process without overheating the sample. Due to the special grinding jar geometry, the sample is thoroughly mixed which results in a narrow particle size distribution.
Unlike other high energy ball mills, the Emax is capable of continuous grinding operation without interruptions for cooling down. This dramatically reduces the grinding time. The high energy input in combination with the unique cooling system provides perfect conditions for effective mechanical alloying or grinding down to the nanometer range.
A wealth of safety features such as the integrated safety closure of the grinding jar, temperature control with automatic start/stop system, and integrated imbalance controls make operation of the bench-top mill Emax very user-friendly.
With the new G:BOX Chemi XX6 and XX9, scientists can work with a unique automated multiplexed function capable of using up to five channels, as well as an edge lighting option for 2D gel capture including DIGE gels. This versatility ensures scientists have a cost- effective imaging system that can generate accurate results from a diverse range of gel and blot types. Images are captured by the G:BOX Chemi XX systems using the powerful GeneSys image capture software, which selects optimal filter/lighting com- binations by utilising its unique database containing imaging conditions for hundreds of commercially available dyes.
Researchers then select their preferred protocol and the G:BOX Chemi XX automatically captures a high-quality image of the different dyes. For even faster, automated image capture, GeneSys includes a unique researcher ‘protocol save’ feature enabling one-click recall of frequently used imaging settings.
