International Labmate celebrates 40 Years at Analytica 2014

Astell Celebrates 130 Years of Autoclave Manufacturing

The expression ‘from little acorns great oaks grow’ is particularly applicable to UK based autoclave manufacturer Astell Scientific, which is celebrating 130 years of success in the manufacture and supply of laboratory equipment this year. The Kent based company has in recent times seen its biggest growth in its core business: the manufacture of autoclaves and sterilisers.

Sales and Marketing Director Dave Thomas said “Over the last few years we have continued to offer a range of high quality products that meet the requirements of modern laboratories. We have one of the most comprehensive ranges of standard autoclaves, with options to suit the vast majority of applications, but where Astell really comes into its own is in the manufacture of custom or ‘bespoke’ equipment. Many customers approach us when considering the purchase of a new autoclave where they have some sort of restriction on their requirement – whether it’s space, budget, a complexity in design, or an unusual application. In the past we offered a ‘one size fits all’ solution, but over the last decade we have become increasingly flexible as a manufacturer, to the point where we are now designing and manufacturing bespoke equipment on a regular basis. The fact that we are listening to our customers, and have the expertise and flexibility to offer the customer precisely what they require, has meant that we are now regarded as the ‘solution provider’ in the autoclave market. As a direct result of this, we have seen a significant increase in business in recent years”.

Astell’s model for the US market

With 130 years of experience fuelling its current strong position in the UK market, Astell, which exports worldwide to more than 90 countries, has also experienced recent growth in the USA establishing its subsidiary Astell Inc. The numbers of visitors to the company website has also nearly tripled over the last three years.

Coincidentally Labmate also celebrates an important anniversary this year. The publication was founded 40 years ago and has proved

a strong partner for Astell over the years both in print and online. We are confident that these two well-known brands will continue to grow, diversify and enjoy mutual success in the future.

Milestones – Xylem’s Bellingham + Stanley and ILM Celebrate Together!

As we, Bellingham + Stanley, edge towards our centenary celebrations later this year, we look back on the many changes since our modest beginnings back in1914 when Leonard Bellingham and Frank Stanley left London’s premier optical instrument makers Adam Hilger Ltd (later Hilger & Watts) to set up their own optical engineering business making refractometers and polarimeters in a three story house at no. 71 Hornsey Rise, London, England.

Although based on the same optical principles, our products of today bear little resemblance to the instruments of yesteryear that played pioneering roles in early DNA research and pharmaceutical drug discovery but it’s not just the instruments that have changed so much over the years, it is also true of how scientists exchanged data too!

The Queen 1946 - Frank Stanley demonstrating a microscope to the Queen with Leonard Bellingham in the background

Princess Margaret 1946 - again Frank Stanley showing the Princess a microscope with Bellingham in the background

Both these shots were taken from the Telegraph & Morning Post in 1946. Quote: THE QUEEN and Princess Margaret at Olympia yesterday when they made a surprise visit to the British Industries Fair. Princess Margaret is looking through a microscope to study a rare beetle at the Scientific Instruments Stand.

In the early years, just a few international journals were available to the scientific community but as distant markets became more accessible and print technology evolved, publishers like International Labmate ceased on the opportunity by offering high quality, full colour print magazines and very soon, new partnerships were being formed between instrument makers, publicists and scientists and the World began to share innovation across the globe.

Today as part of Xylem Inc, Bellingham + Stanley continues to build on the legacy left behind by Messrs. Bellingham in continuum with International Labmate as we celebrate our anniversaries together.
