Searching for the Unknown Bio-Rad Laboratories announced the release of KnowItAll®
ATR/IR ID Expert™ and Raman ID
Expert™ solutions for spectral identification.”The spectral intelligence built into KnowItAll ATR/ IR ID Expert combined with the world’s largest spectral reference collection provides the highest level of expertise to any scientist, whether a novice or power user,” said Gregory M. Banik, PhD., Bio-Rad General Manager, Informatics.
Scientists often employ multiple software tools to identify a spectrum depending on its chemical composition and the availability of reference spectra, and even the most experienced researchers can misinterpret results, particularly if they choose the wrong software tool.
With ATR/IR ID Expert and Raman ID Expert, the user simply opens an unknown spectrum and the software automatically performs single and multiple component searches as well as functional group analyses simultaneously and summarises the results on a single screen to give a complete view of all possibilities for the unknown spectrum.
If there are problems with the user’s query spectrum, ID Expert has the spectral intelligence to identify these issues and suggest ways to fix them. Once the user has identified the unknown spectrum, a PDF report can be generated with a single click.

Products Featured at Pittcon Digesting Larger Sample Volumes in Minutes
Perform acid digestion for trace metals analysis in as little as 10 minutes, including cool down. With full pressure and temperature control of every sample, the Discover SP-D 80 Microwave Digestion System from CEM is said to run 1 - 2 gram samples with ease.
With temperatures up to 260 oC the system can accommodate a wide variety of samples including pharmaceutical, food, plastics, oils, organics, inorganics, metals and US EPA Methods 3015, 3051, and 3052. The system features individual sample programming which can be run in any sequence. Utilising 6 or 12 set 80-mL quartz vessels an optional, automated 24-place sample deck allows the SP-D 80 to run unattended overnight.
Designed for safety and durability, the compact system can be placed on a benchtop or in a fume hood. CEM’s user-friendly, 21 CFR Part 11 compliant software is ideal for pharmaceutical QA/QC testing, showing you at a glance the status of your reaction and providing documented run data.
Data Interpretation Made Easier
The AccuTOF time-of-flight mass spectrometer introduced by Jeol at Pittcon 2013 has received great interest from the mass spectrometry community with both new orders and systems already delivered and installed in the US and Canada.
JEOL, GC Image LLC and Zoex have collaborated to enhance the GC Image software for easier interpretation of mass data obtainable with the Jeol AccuTOF GCV 4G TOF spectrometer equipped with the Zoex thermal modulator. Data from this instrument can be imported directly into GC Image for processing GC x GC data. Exact masses and isotopic data provide elemental compositions and mass spectral database searching for the identification of both knowns and unknowns in highly complex mixtures. Exact-mass selected ion chromatograms provide selectivity for target compound identification.
Jeol’s AccuTOF Dart business also continues to be strong; Shrader Software Solutions has continued to work with Jeol to add automated reporting capabilities for both quantitative and qualitative DART data measured with autosamplers such as the DART SVP transmission module and most recently, the IonSense Quick Strip cards, the company said.

Accessory Approximates In-Process Calorimetric Values
Julabo has introduced the VFCpro flow measurement and control accessory features for its PRESTO®
range of temperature control systems. With VFCpro the PRESTO® user can measure
and control the flow within the loop circuit. A defined flow rate can be kept constant while simultaneously controlling the temperature; for example, the user can determine the flow rate of the bath liquid of a jacketed reactor.
It is available as the VFCpro-24 with M24x1.5 connections and the VFCpro-38 with M38x1.5 connections. For users who wish to integrate the flow measurement unit into a plant application Julabo offers a VFC installation version. The VFCpro can be used with all PRESTO®
models A40
and/or W40 upward in a temperature range from -100 °C to +300°C. The maximum flow rate is 50 l/min for the VFCpro-24 and 100 l/min for the VFCpro-38. This makes the flow measurement ideal for scientific and industrial applications.
Together with a PRESTO® the VFCpro can be used for the approximate determination of
calorimetric values, e.g. during an analysis of heat volumes or scale-ups from laboratory to kilo or production scale. The measured values are directly shown on the PRESTO® be evaluated with available software: EasyTEMP®
display and can Professional by JULABO. The VFCpro achieves
accuracies of up to 6% and is an economic calorimetric alternative especially in cases where the purchase of a precision calorimeter is prohibitive.

Poster Sessions at Pittcon As usual, the poster sessions at Pittcon were a hugely popular.
Pittcon 2015 8th - 12th March - New Orleans
Pittcon 2015 will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans from 8th - 12th March. Pittcon is the world’s largest annual premier conference and exposition on laboratory science. It is organised by The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, a Pennsylvania not-for-profit educational corporation which is comprised of the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP).
Pittcon attracts more than 18,000 attendees from industry, academia and government from 90 countries worldwide and is managed by a committee of volunteers and 11 staff. Proceeds from Pittcon fund science education and outreach at all levels, kindergarten through adult.
Pittcon’s target audience is not just ‘analytical chemists’, but all laboratory scientists—anyone who identifies, quantifies, analyses or tests the chemical or biological properties of compounds or molecules, or who manages these laboratory scientists. Having grown beyond its roots in analytical chemistry and spectroscopy, Pittcon has evolved into an event that now also serves a diverse constituency encompassing life sciences, pharmaceutical discovery and QA, food safety, environmental, bioterrorism and other emerging markets.
Pittcon donates more than a million dollars a year to provide financial and administrative support for various science outreach activities including science equipment grants, research grants, scholarships and internships for students, awards to teachers and professors, and grants to public science centres, libraries and museums.
