Waters Celebrates 10 Years of ACQUITY UPLC On 4th March at Pittcon®
UltraPerformance LC® (UPLC®
2014, Waters celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the ACQUITY ) System, a technology that created a new industry standard for
chromatographic performance.
“In 2004, we changed the game. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) wasn’t keeping pace with business demands to analyse more samples, faster and with better results. The introduction of ACQUITY UPLC in 2004 transformed laboratory science and the analytical science industry,” said Art Caputo, President of the Waters Division of Waters Corporation.
Over the last ten years, ACQUITY UPLC has had a profound effect on laboratories worldwide, both scientifically as well as from a business standpoint. The novel ability of the ACQUITY UPLC to perform separations on 1.7 micron particle technology coupled with the ability to operate at 15,000 psi, opened new possibilities for analytical testing. The narrow, more concentrated peaks of ACQUITY UPLC improved ionisation efficiency. Enhanced resolution and robustness led to high-quality, reproducible analysis in significantly less time, reducing run times by up to a factor of 10 compared to HPLC technology. Through this increased productivity, it has been shown time and again that one ACQUITY UPLC system typically displaces multiple HPLC instruments.
Scientific impact has long been the driver for UPLC, but along the way we’ve also made a pretty significant environmental impact. ACQUITY UPLC has also proven to be a sustainable solution for laboratories: saving energy, using less solvent and producing less waste. Again, in comparison to HPLC technology, laboratories utilising ACQUITY UPLC save approximately 222 litres of solvent per year. Since switching to ACQUITY, Waters customers have saved 5.5 million litres of solvent. That’s equal to eight times the volume of the Washington Monument!
Or in terms of cost, at $100 per litre, our customers have saved over a half billion dollars in solvent purchase costs. That number alone is impressive, but if you also factor in the high cost of solvent disposal, the savings reach a billion dollars or more.
Looking back a decade later, it’s clear that ACQUITY UPLC Technology delivered on the Waters philosophy: that purposeful innovation can drive significant impact. In doing so, UPLC revived an industry, and led us into the new era in separations science - one that Waters continues to advance today.

Optical Expertise a Cornerstone for Starna
Starna Scientific Ltd (formerly Optiglass Ltd) is celebrating its 50th anniversary and its lineage of optical expertise, traceable to the early part of the last century, that reinforces the companies worldwide reputation for quality service and co- operation in the production and supply of spectrophotometer cells, optical components and Certified Reference Materials.
During the 1950s, the founding members of the company developed and perfected the technique of fully fusing optically polished component parts by heat alone, without distortion. This major advance transformed the design and production of spectrophotometer cells and associated products. Continual development and improvement is reflected in today’s products.
In 1964 the company started with a staff of two, which by 1968 had already grown to a skilled workforce of 50, its rapid growth demonstrating the success of its manufacturing processes.
Today Starna Scientific Ltd has over 100 employees at its manufacturing facility in Hainault to facilitate the production of several thousand product types each year in an ISO 9001 certified production facility, from design and development of a product through to scheduled production. Starna began manufacturing and selling solid fluorescent references in the 1960s, before successfully permanently flame-sealing its first liquid photometric reference standards in 1971. In 2001 the knowledge and expertise built up by the Starna Reference Material Calibration Laboratory over thirty years was recognised in its UKAS Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025. Starna’s status as a leading producer of Certified Reference Materials was further underlined when it received the UK’s 1st Certificate of Accreditation to ISO Guide 34 in 2006 as a Reference Material Producer.
Starna’s Certified Reference Material range
Today the Starna CRM range continues to expand into new areas in UV-Vis, NIR, Fluorescence, HPLC & FTIR Spectroscopy references. The company exports over 90% of its production, with offices in the US, Germany, Australia and China, and representation in all of the developed and many developing markets worldwide.
