Fred Leese was born in Stafford in May 1892. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in August 1910, and advanced to Stoker Petty Officer in November 1918. Leese served with H.M.S. Carnarvon (cruiser), March 1912 - November 1917, during which time she served in the Battle of the Falklands, 8 December 1914.


Frank James Leach was born in Croydon, Surrey in July 1897. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1915, and advanced to Able Seaman in May 1917. Leach served with H.M.S. Agamemnon (battleship), June 1915 - November 1917, during which time she participated in the Dardanelles Campaign. He was invalided out of service in November 1919.

Andrew McDonald was born in Liverpool on 22 June 1882, and entered naval service on 21 October 1901, enlisting for 12 years, by trade a cook. He was serving in the Acasta class Destroyer H.M.S. Contest when, on 18 September 1917, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-106 in the Western Approaches of the Channel. His service record is annotated: ‘To express appreciation of the behaviour under very trying circumstances, on the occasion of the loss of H.M.S. Contest.’ His Great War Medals were sent to H. M.S. Emperor of India. He was appointed to H.M.S Greenwich in August 1918.

Thomas Sayer was born at Brentwood, Essex on 30 July 1888 and commenced his naval service as Stoker 2nd Class on 7 January 1911, in H.M.S. Victory. He was paid a war gratuity when serving in H.M.S. St. Vincent and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in January 1926. He was shore pensioned on 6 January 1933, but was briefly recalled for service on 27 August 1939, being discharged to shore (not required) on 16 October 1939.

Charles Henry Starmore was born at Alverstoke, Hampshire on 24 September 1880 and entered naval service as Stoker Second Class on 31 October 1898. His medals for service in the Great War were sent to H.M.S. Wiverne. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in February 1920, and was shore pensioned in November 1920. He subsequently joined the Merchant Navy.

William Robert Tubbs was born in Southampton on 11 January 1882 and joined the Royal Navy on 28 May 1900, for a period of 12 years. He served in various vessels including the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert. His Great War medals were issued to H.M.S. Vectis. He was shore pensioned in May 1922, and subsequently transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve.
