Professor Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Benecke received his doctorate from the University of Strasbourg in 1892, and through various roles in botany rose to become Director of the Berlin Botanical Institute. He was awarded the Gothe Medal for Arts and Sciences on 23 September 1943.
