John William Holmans was born in Sandwich, Kent in August 1872. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in September 1895, and advanced to Chief Stoker in January 1917. Holmans served with H.M.S. Penelope (light cruiser), 10 December 1914 - 28 July 1916, during which time she was heavily damaged by a torpedo fired from the German submarine UB-29 off the Norfolk coast. He was Shore Demobilised in February 1919.


William Arthur Wood was born in Leicester in January 1895. He joined the Royal Navy as Armourer’s Crew in August 1914. He served with H.M.S. Furious, 3 August 1917 - 19 November 1917, during which time Squadron Commander E. Dunning carried out the first landings of aircraft on a moving ship - being killed during one attempt, 7 August 1917. Wood advanced to Armourer’s Mate, and was Shore Demobilised in June 1919.

Walter Nudds was born in Kings Lynn in February 1873. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in January 1897, and advanced to Chief Stoker in March 1915 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in February 1912).


Nudds served with H.M.S. Liverpool (cruiser), September 1910 - May 1919, during which time she was engaged during the battle of Heligoland Bight (28 August 1914), the attempted rescue of the sinking H.M.S. Audacious, operations off the West Coast of Africa, and during the Russian Intervention.

Arthur Trays was born at Torpoint, Cornwall on 14 October 1884 and commenced his naval service on 11 November 1903. His medals for service in the Great War were issued to him for service in H.M.S. Briton and his war service gratuity was paid when serving in H.M.S. Vivid. His service record is annotated that as Chief Writer he was posted for service to the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve.

Edward Anderson Norris was born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in March 1890. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in June 1906, and advanced to Yeoman of Signals in January 1918. Norris served with H.M.S. Weymouth (cruiser), October 1913 - May 1916, during which time she served in operations off the East African Coast against the Königsberg - eventually trapping the latter in the Rufiiji River.


Norris advanced to Chief Yeoman of Signals in November 1926 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in May 1927). 160 Four: Chief Petty Officer E. H. Brown, B.E.M., Royal Navy

Edgar Henry Brown was born in Paddington, London, on 1 May 1897 and commenced his service in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1903. He served in H.M.S. Achilles during the Great War and was paid a war gratuity when serving in H.M.S. King George V. He was shore pensioned on 19 August 1927, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 17 July 1928. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Birthday Honours’ List of 1943.

Ernest Sydney Spencer Herbert Danvers was born in Islington, London, on 21 June 1877 and commenced his naval service as a Boy 2nd Class in 1893. He received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in September 1915, issued to H.M.S. Africa. He was shore pensioned on 16 June 1917.
