Charlie Ham was born in Honiton, Devon, on 30 August 1868 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 12 August 1884. Posted to H.M.S. Calliope on 25 January 1887, he was serving in her during the severe hurricane at Apia, Samoa, on 15 March 1889, a storm so violent that the Caplliope was the only vessel in the harbour that was able to get out to sea, and thus avoid being wrecked at her moorings. Advanced Petty Officer 2nd Class on 1 December 1894, he transferred to the Coast Guard at Lossiemouth on 12 February 1897, and was commended for his gallant behaviour at the the wreck of Scotch Lassie at Lossiemouth on 29 July 1898.


Ham was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 7 January 1902, whilst stationed at Stonehaven; his final postings were at Brixham and Branscombe, before he was shore pensioned on 11 June 1907. Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve on 8 July 1907, he was recalled for service during the Great War, and served in various shore based establishments until finally being shore demobilised on 24 April 1919.

William Owen was born in South Shields on 4 June 1874 and entered naval service as a Boy 2nd Class on 14 August 1890. Advanced Acting Chief Yeoman of Signals on 1 October 1906, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1907, and was invalided out of the service on 21 October 1912. Recalled for service during the Great War, he served as Chief Yeoman of Signals in H. M.S. Ganges, and was awarded the M.S.M. for minesweeping during 1918 (London Gazette of 24 March 1919).

James Frederick Walker was born in Portsmouth on 31 March 1869 and entered naval service on 12 May 1887. Awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 8 February 1906, he served during the Great War in H.M.S. Iron Duke during the Great War, and was present in her during the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, where she served as Admiral Jellicoe’s Flagship. He died on 25 March 1917 during an asthmatic attack and is buried in Portsmouth (Kingston) Cemetery.


John Walters joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 25 March 1895 and was advanced Leading Seaman on 30 October 1903. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 1 November 1910, and was promoted Petty Officer on 15 July 1915. He subsequently joined the Royal Fleet Reserve.

Frederick Rowett was born in Southampton on 2 July 1868 and joined the Royal Navy as a Shipwright on 21 March 1890. He Advanced Leading Shipwright on 27 February 1896, and Carpenter’s Mate on 11 August 1898, he was transferred to the Coast Guard as a Divisional Carpenter on 16 August 1903, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 23 March 1905. His final posting was to East Cowes, Isle of Wight, prior to his being shore pensioned on 22 March 1912. Recalled to the Service following the outbreak of the Great War, he served throughout the War in H.M.S. Victory, and was shore demobilised on 28 June 1919.
