WELL PHARMACY, ALLOA
T
he refurbishment of the Well Pharmacy in Alloa was always going to prove something of a challenge. Having had a number of
aborted refits previously - and some partial refits which had not improved the pharmacy - it was clear that the local team needed persuading that this latest refit plan was a) going to happen and b) going to create a better working environment for them.
For that reason, the pharmacy manager Lee Drennan, pharmacist Carole Smith and their team, including Regional Manager Nisith Nathwani, were involved in the discussions and plans from the outset and consulted at every stage.
The refit was of such a scale that a temporary dispensary had to be built at the front of the unit allowing dispensing activities to continue, whilst the shopfitting team worked at the back to create what

would become the final dispensary. Once this was completed, the team moved into their new dispensary as work continued in the retail space, again in sections, to allow the pharmacy to function throughout the refit. Whilst a challenge at times, both for patients and for the team, there was no interruption to business.
Without the early engagement of the whole team, none of this could have been achieved. They worked extra hours and at weekends to ensure dispensary stock was moved when it needed to be (twice), tolerated work noise and dust throughout the project and had to constantly explain and apologise to patients for the noise, dust and inconvenience.
This time they accepted it was happening and, having seen and been involved in the drawing up of the plans, knew it would be worth it in the long run.
Following successful completion of this large refit project, the working environment for the team has significantly improved and, as a result of the modern appearance of the pharmacy and happier team, the patient experience has also been greatly enhanced.
The improved facilities in the branch as a result of this refit have provided premises which have facilitated additional capacity for clinical services and have consequently given the team scope to increase income and drive patient care.
As a result of the vastly enlarged dispensary, and with Lee’s management and support, these processes have now been fully implemented and embraced by the team. Patients have found that their prescriptions are dispensed in a timelier manner as a result of the improvements in workflow, and staff have freed up time from
