in the last-minute traveller or those needing urgent vaccinations for work, eg, on cruise ships, working off-shore.

The travel consultations are patient centred. Leanne and Joanne assess the risk of the traveller (health, medication and vaccination history) and their whole trip; they don’t simply administer vaccines and hand out anti-malarials.

As it is more of a holistic approach to staying healthy while travelling, the pharmacy advises on HPS- recommended repellents and discusses what to take in a first aid kit, as well as occasionally discussing minor ailments and common clinical conditions and improving inhaler technique for asthmatics.

Sally, Joanne and the team are regularly thanked for being so thorough and have lots of repeat patients as they trust their advice and support.

In 2015, the pharmacy was approached by a local high school for

advice about the school trip for fifth and sixth-year pupils to Venezuela in 2016. Sally and Joanne presented the travel advice to parents, teachers and students so that they all received the same information about the trip and families then chose to book into the clinic for the suggested vaccinations.

Since then, they have been invited back for trips to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in 2018 and recently for Peru in 2020. Feedback is always positive from teachers, parents and pupils and the pharmacy team has seen families come back with younger siblings.

The judges were extremely impressed by the pharmacy’s approach to this healthcare requirement.

‘It is obvious,’ they said, ‘that a holistic approach is adopted both for staff training addressing specialist and generalist requirements, with regular staff meetings in addition undertaking comprehensive wellness checks for patients.’

‘I think the team will all really appreciate this award and it will give them plenty of encouragement to continue the great work that they are already doing’ Leanne Carey
