WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP

DAVIDSONS CHEMISTS, BRIDGE OF EARN

B

ridge of Earn (BOE) is a small town in Perthshire with a population of approximately 2,500. Davidsons Chemists serves a

population of around 3,500-4,000 patients, with significant numbers of elderly patients and young families. The pharmacy was predominantly a one pharmacy-one surgery village up until 30 August 2019 when unfortunately, and unexpectedly, the local surgery closed.

The surgery, pharmacy and the wider Bridge of Earn community were only given eight working days’ notice that the surgery would close. This news was very concerning to both the pharmacy team and the local population. Everyone knew they had a massive task on their hands to transfer 3500 patients from BOE surgery to surgeries in Perth, Kinross and Newburgh surgery in NHS Fife. The fact that this also meant working across health board boundaries brought additional challenges in cross-border liaison. Fortunately, the pharmacy already had well

established links with the local surgery and the surgeries in the surrounding areas (Perth, Lochleven, Abernethy and Newburgh).

The team worked tirelessly and collaboratively with a number of healthcare partners from these areas including: NHS Tayside Pharmacy Department, NHS Tayside Primary care services, NHS Tayside Public health team, associate director of pharmacy for NHS Tayside, GP partners, practice managers and healthcare assistants.

The team wanted to try and ensure that a high standard of care was continually being provided to the patients throughout this challenging process, and so they held multiple meetings with the local surgery and their practice pharmacist to try and identify areas in which they could help with the smooth transition of patients to their new surgeries. It was agreed in conjunction with Davidsons Chemists' head office that they would do everything

possible to try and help facilitate this transition. Superintendent pharmacist, Karen Gordon, met with David Coulson (Associate director of pharmacy NHS Tayside), Andrew Radley (Consultant in Public Health Pharmacy NHS Tayside) and Alastair Brand (Principal Clinical Pharmacist for Perth and Kinross) to discuss what gaps in the service may arise as a result of the surgery closing and how the pharmacy team could help ensure continued excellent patient care.

The loss of the surgery in BOE, although unfortunate, was an excellent example of an acute situation that required a huge multi-agency collaboration in order to ensure continued excellent patient-centred care was provided to all of the local community.

The pharmacy team met with the local MP Luke Graham and MSP Liz Smith to discuss the challenges that they were facing in the pharmacy
