INTERNATIONAL CENTRE PUTS SCOTTISH

PHARMACY ON NATIONAL STAGE

EDINBURGH’S INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE MAY HAVE PLAYED HOST TO MANY SCOTTISH EVENTS AND CEREMONIES, BUT IT WAS THE RECENT VENUE FOR AN AWARDS CEREMONY THAT SHOWS WHY SCOTTISH PHARMACY – COMMUNITY AND HOSPITAL – IS GLOBALLY-RENOWNED!

T

he welcome reception was buzzing with excitement on Saturday 29 February, as the cream of the region’s pharmacy sector

gathered to pay tribute to the achievements of its profession at the Scottish Pharmacist Awards.

This year’s awards – once again attracted the main shakers and movers of Scotland’s pharmacy profession. Well-known comedian and presenter, Fred MacAulay was the host of the glittering gala and proved to be a major success on the evening, firstly by ensuring the smooth running of the ceremony itself and then by providing entertainment at the end of the evening for the attendees.

Before starting the awards presentation, Fred welcomed to the stage the Sales and Operations Director of event partner, AAH Pharmaceuticals, Ashley Cowen.

20 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST

Ashley began his speech by talking about how great a role community pharmacists play in the life of both himself and his family, emphasising how the accessibility of pharmacists makes them the first port of call when it comes to minor healthcare issues.

‘Pharmacy has, however, moved on,’ he told the assembled guests, ‘in a different but equally meaningful way.’

In light of the current pandemic scare that the United Kingdom – as with the rest of the world – is facing, it was hardly surprising that Ashley mentioned Covid-19.

‘Pharmacists will be at the forefront of dealing with this virus,’ he said, ‘and you will be a big part of the solution. Thank you for your thought leadership on this issue.’

Ashley then turned his attention to the future.

‘There are challenging times ahead,’ he said. ‘We are facing a time of change and there is no doubt that it will be challenging. When it comes to any type of change, we tend to see what’s bad, but I firmly believe that, as a profession, you will meet those challenges that are to come. That’s why it’s great to be here on a night like this; to celebrate your achievements and soak up the positive moves and innovative work that is being done.

‘The Scottish Pharmacist Awards give us the opportunity to stop and think. To hear about the amazing work that’s being done. To meet people who have done brilliant things. You are rubbing shoulders with the heroes in our communities. We are going to make a real thing about them tonight. Isn’t it so much better to celebrate the great things that happen day to day than to worry about the challenges that are to be faced in the future?’ he concluded.
