may affect our judgement when dealing with this resident’s medication. We wanted to educate to provide better outcomes for residents and staff. We wanted to improve care given by allowing staff the insight into the decisions made by others for the resident’s care.’
The pharmacy team now intends to continue developing the training by feedback. There will also be an annual session with pharmacists to iron out any issues specifically care home related. However, bi-monthly management meetings allow for communication in between and regular emailing.
‘The medication manual has been an innovative resource for medication training,’ Emma continued. ‘In listening to the needs of our community care homes, we have developed something unique to properly educate staff dealing with medicines. In redefining medication
training, a new standard has been created for our care homes.
‘The insight gained from all staff in care homes has allowed us to identify weaknesses in their training and give us focus points, ultimately becoming the main chapters of the manual. The manual itself is user friendly, easily digestible, and an example of how the pharmacy profession is modernising and adapting. We are empowering care staff to make better, more informed decisions and pass on their education to their patients. As a result, residents and families feel confident in the service we are providing. My company, my team and I, have worked hard to be able to provide a first-class medication training and there are no boundaries on how this may develop in the future.'
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the judges referred to Melville Chemist’s initiative as ‘a very impressive contribution’ to its community.
‘Tis award really validates the work that we do with care homes. We really pride ourselves on the work that we do and we look forward to working with more care homes over the coming years’ Emma Boyle
‘RPS is very supportive of getting more pharmacy input into care homes. We have been doing so much work in this area to date and plan to do much more in the future. Tis award is very dear to our hearts’ Aileen Bryson, Deputy Director, RPS Scotland
