and what support the Government could provide in helping them in this difficult situation.

The team also took the opportunity to discuss how community pharmacy embeds itself as an integral part of the primary healthcare team and elaborated on current service provision and potential future developments. In detail, they discussed how the benefits of access to shared records and pharmacists as independent prescribers had been of value locally and how this could be extended nationally. They also discussed the forthcoming extension of community pharmacies management of common clinical conditions under the Pharmacy First umbrella.

The team liaised with the Practice Manager at Taymount Surgery and agreed to stock hearing aid batteries. This meant NHS patients could receive these from the pharmacy locally rather than having to get two buses or a taxi into Perth and back again in order to obtain their hearing aid batteries. Although this may seem a small addition to pharmacy services,

this move was widely welcomed by the local population and demonstrates the value of community pharmacies’ accessibility.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the judges considered this ‘an exceptional project undertaken in exceptional circumstances’.

‘The community pharmacy,’ they said, ‘came to the rescue of the local community when the only GP practice was forced to close at short notice. The response from the wider pharmacy team was outstanding. Key to their success was the existing goodwill and respect for the pharmacy, leadership from the Branch Manager, collaboration with a range of stakeholders within and beyond the profession, ability to undertake additional roles, willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ and a superb range of communication initiatives to allay patient concerns. A needs assessment was completed and a plan of action was agreed and implemented. The range of benchmarks and testimonials viewed by the judges clearly demonstrate the impact of these interventions.’

‘Tese were really challenging times for both the community and the pharmacy. Our primary focus from the outset was the patients. Everybody rallied round to find solutions and it was a great team effort’ Andrew Watson

‘It was an absolute joy to hear Andrew's story. Tere couldn't be any pharmacy more deserving of this award than Andrew and his team at Davidson's Chemist in Bridge of Earn’ Brendan Moffatt, Sales Manager, Bestway Medhub & Wardles
