Go green: designing sustainable events

Making a corporate event greener is now, more so than ever, high on the agenda and for good reason. Not sure where to start? Well, you can easily make a positive environmental impact by adapting key elements of your event. Lucy Chamberlain (pictured), Creative Manager of NYS, shares her top tips on making events more sustainable

GETTING THERE There’s no denying that your attendees’ travel plans will impact your event’s carbon footprint. Knowing where your attendees are travelling from and picking a venue that is closest to most of your intended audience will reduce overall travel miles. A venue that has great accessibility to public transport

will help, and you could also encourage carpooling by using a delegate registration website that has the capabilities to help pair car poolers. You could even incentivise carpooling. For example, you could arrange a prize-draw for VIP tickets to an in-demand music or sporting event for those who opt to carshare.

CHOOSE A VENUE THAT HAS SUSTAINABILITY CREDENTIALS One example is the newly refurbished East Midlands Conference Centre (opening soon), which has placed sustainability at the heart of its redevelopment. The venue has water refill stations at key points, reducing the need for

single-use plastics, and is committed to sourcing local produce to help reduce carbon footprint, as well as making sure food waste is either recycled or composted.

SOURCE YOUR SUPPLIERS WISELY From AV to catering, there are plenty of ways your suppliers can contribute to the sustainability of your event. For example, choosing a catering solution that uses locally grown, organic, fair trade products is one way to go greener throughout your event.

A FOCUS ON REDUCING FOOD WASTE One of the biggest factors to consider at a sustainable event is food waste. To cater for this element, you could look at designing menus that factor in minimal food waste – long gone are the days of the side salad. At the end of the event, if there’s leftover food and the

menu has been designed in a particular way, you could use a charity, such as FareShare or the app ‘Olio’, to collect and redistribute the food.
