L-R: Some of the masks made by Angela King; Staff at the Royal Derby, who have received the masks; Angela King Schools team up to make vital PPE

Secondary schools across the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust are set to join forces to make face visors for staff working on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus. But they are in desperate need

of donations of materials to be able to produce the vital equipment – including 1.5mm thick polypropylene sheet and acetate photocopying sheets. Schools were inspired to act after

teacher Angela King made hundreds of visors using a laser cutter at Saint Benedict Catholic Voluntary Academy, in Derby, where she is Director of Technology. Several requests for visors were

Keep creative and carry on

A Nottingham business coach has shared tips and advice to help businesses deal with the ongoing Covid-19 crisis and get ready for when they emerge at the other side. Maureen Whyman, founder

of business coaching consultancy Lose the Box, says her Transformation Map process can help SMEs and sole traders to work out the impacts of Covid-19 on business plans and timelines, so they can develop and plan their direction. A transformation map is a

creative business planning tool that engages busy people in change, gives enough structure to the planning process while encouraging creativity, and helps to reduce business burnout.

made after Mrs King’s efforts were featured in the local media, so the Trust has now asked its other schools with laser cutters if they have the capacity to do the same. St Thomas More in Buxton has

made 80 visors so far and it is hoped that St Philip Howard, in Glossop, Saint John Houghton, in Ilkeston, and Blessed Robert Sutton, in Burton, may be able come on board. Sean McClafferty, Chief Executive

of the Trust, said: “We were so impressed by Angela’s work and the impact that was having that we asked our other schools if they could also produce visors. “There is a possibility that they

can support this project, but we desperately need donations of the materials for the visors as our own stocks are almost depleted. “We have already received a

donation from Polycopy, in Loughborough, which is fantastic, and we would like to thank them for that. We would love to hear from anyone who can support our teachers and we are sure the staff working on the frontline, playing such a vital role in the fight against Coronavirus, would be extremely grateful.” Andrew Muldoon, Estates and

Facilities Manager at the Trust, said: “The contributions of all staff have been truly inspiring, and this is one

of a number of ways our staff are supporting frontline services through this period. “The number of requests

received following the initial donation was quite concerning and provided the desire to produce as many visors as possible with the resources available.” So far, visors made by Mrs King

have been sent to the Royal Derby Hospital orthopaedic surgery ward, maternity ward and renal unit and three care organisations.

Anyone who can make donations is asked to contact Andrew on estates@srscmat.co.uk or 07708 906 860.

200 Degrees Coffee donates materials to protect workers

200 Degrees Coffee has donated 1,000 acetate sheets to the Queens Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham, while raising a Nottinghamshire-wide community plea for further donations. Its work with the community has helped alleviate the shortage of protective visors for NHS staff on the front line, with donations totalling at approximately 10,000 acetate sheets. Co-founder, Rob Darby, said: “When we heard that

the NHS had limited resources on PPE, we wanted to help. The team at our local hospital, QMC, are doing an amazing job to create these visors in-house and we hope our donation can make a real difference in the effort to save lives. “A big thank you to all those who supported us and

donated acetate sheets, it was brilliant to see such a huge response from the local community.” The company also delivered 50 cafetieres – each

with a kilo of freshly ground coffee – to the Nottingham Hospitals Charity. Nigel Gregory, Director of Development at

Nottingham Hospitals Charity, said: “Boosting the morale of our frontline staff is a hugely important, so we are delighted to be able to provide teams across our hospitals with donations of 200 Degrees coffee and cafetieres. “The ability to quickly make great coffee will do wonders for our hardworking staff.”
