CHAMBER NEWS

Positive response to Covid- 19 membership relief fund

As part of its response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chamber last month introduced a £100,000 financial package to help support members affected by coronavirus. The fund enables Chamber members which have

been impacted by the lockdown restrictions to claim a rebate of up to 100% of their membership fees, for the next three months. There has been a huge response to the fund so far,

with 163 Chamber members making a claim. It is part of the Chamber’s ongoing response to the

coronavirus crisis, which includes the launch of a dedicated online portal to give members access to key information, and lobbying efforts with local authorities and national Government to ensure the interventions announced are reaching businesses as quickly and effectively as possible. Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles said: “These

are extremely challenging times for business, and we need to work together to get through them. “Businesses need a support network around them

now, more than ever, and our Membership Relief Fund is just one more way the Chamber can help its members. “It is absolutely vital that businesses stay connected

and have a voice. Our members can be confident that their challenges are being fed back to local authorities and Government to help shape their response to this national crisis and provide the help where it’s needed the most.”

Chamber joins forces with CISCO for technology event

The Chamber is pleased to be working with the British Chambers of Commerce and Cisco to bring together business leaders from the IT sector to discuss the opportunities technology presents to business growth. As Covid-19 has brought a sea

change to our personal and professional lives, in a matter of weeks businesses have been forced to adapt rapidly to this new working reality. One of the key business challenges is maintaining cybersecurity while every employee works from home. Many small companies could

support occasional remote working, but very few were set up to enable all employees to work from home, all the time. Moreover, the sheer speed of the change left IT teams with little time to plan. Maintaining security in this

unprecedented environment is a daunting prospect – and all of this comes at a time when revenues may have been severely limited by the outbreak. But by focusing on the basics

and staying positive, businesses can establish and maintain a secure way for employees to work from home.

While three quarters of decision

makers view technology as a driver of agile working and productivity, a Cisco Small Business IT Survey found that: • More than nine out of 10 business owners spend less than a quarter of their budget on IT

• Fewer than one in five have a dedicated in-house IT Manager

• Over a third of small businesses don’t have a contingency plan in place for falling victim to a cyberattack

• Only one in 10 businesses don’t make use of any IT security whatsoever.

The Ponemon Institute Global

State of Cybersecurity for SMBs Research Report from October 2019, meanwhile, found that 72% of respondents had experienced a cyberattack.

This will be an online roundtable, taking place on the morning of the 12 May to discuss the issues. If you are a senior decision maker in the IT Sector, employing between five and 250 people and want to find out more, contact policy@emc- dnl.co.uk or you can book your place online at https://bit.ly/2KoW35D
