THE FIRST WORD
Welcome to May’s edition of Business Network. The world we live in has changed beyond all recognition over the past few weeks,
with the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic having a huge impact on many aspects of everyday life.
The need to protect people’s health and the NHS and prevent the spread of the virus
has meant that we’ve all had to make sacrifices – some big, some small – to support the national effort. Many of us have found ourselves in isolation or working from home and more still
have found themselves on furlough leave as the Government looks to find a solution to the lockdown issue, to get the economy moving again in the safest way possible. Sadly, there are some businesses and individuals who face an even more uncertain
future. Our thoughts are with those, with the key workers who are helping to care for people and keep essential businesses open and, of course, the families up and down the country which have been affected by this deadly illness. However, in spite of the serious and critical nature of the situation we find ourselves
in, there’s a lot of good to come out of it. It’s been great to see the way that businesses have lent their expertise and resources
to support the UK at its time of need, whether by switching manufacturing to produce much-needed PPE, donating time and effort to ensure vital supplies reach the people in our communities who need it the most, or just providing opportunities to help people stay connected when they may be feeling isolated or alone. We’ve tried to capture as much of this positivity within these pages as possible, to
showcase the best of what Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire business has to offer in times of national crisis. Stay safe and well, look out for each other.
Best wishes, Jon Smart Interim Editor, Business Network
