ith ever-increasing tonnage and passenger numbers passing through UK ports, service providers are


continuously enhancing their offer across a range of essential support functions including transport, replenishment and other shoreside logistics.


Solent Stevedores at Southampton is currently making preparations for the arrival of P&O Cruises’ new flagship Iona.


‘The logistical challenges behind servicing a vessel of this size and scale are highly complex,’ says Tom Dynes, the firm’s operations director.


‘An average turnaround day for Iona will see around 18,000 items of luggage handled and in the region of 500 pallets of fresh produce, technical and hotel stores being loaded,’ he explains.


‘Handling this volume of cargo in such a narrow time window and in a confined space is never easy and requires a highly skilled and choreographed workforce able to work across multiple parts of the ship and cruise terminal simultaneously.


‘It is an operation that has to be carefully and meticulously planned – preparations for Iona have been ongoing for nearly two years,’ adds Dynes.

SCH, the UK’s most extensive provider of cruise ship services, is expecting a significant increase in its Liverpool business in 2020.


SCH will also have a new major caller in Southampton where Royal Caribbean will base its Quantum class Anthem of the Seas. Other lines being handled by SCH in Southampton this year include Celebrity and Azamara.


CMV, Ponant Cruises, Sea Cloud and Noble Caledonia are among those sailing from Portsmouth, where SCH’s sister company Southern Maritime Services provides cruise services.


SCH sister company, Cruise and Passenger Services (CPS), is also looking at a busy 2020. The cruise passenger valet parking specialists will support more than 230 ship calls in Southampton, primarily by Carnival UK brands. CPS also provides its specialist services in Liverpool and Portsmouth.

Guests visiting Edinburgh via the Firth of Forth have the opportunity to learn all they need to know about the call via a new App.


The CruiseForth Project which engages with local businesses around East Central Scotland, and supports welcome arrangements for cruise passengers arriving at ports for Edinburgh and Dundee, launched the CruiseForth App.


Supported by funding from the Scottish Enterprise Tourism Destination Development Fund (SETDDF), the App provides information about arrival arrangements and all the cruise friendly businesses in the area.


Project manager Peter Wilson said ‘The App is designed to enhance the information already provided through the CruiseForth. com website, and the local welcome provided on the quayside by the Welcome Teams. Now passengers will be able to either plan ahead or by downloading the App, take information with them as they decide on their own itinerary. Passengers can search the directory, create their own plan for the day, connect through to book tickets, or through the mapping function to understand the distances involved, as well as to orientate themselves. There will also be easy links to local transport providers to help visitors move around.’
