PORTS TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 2 in Kiel
Last year, Mukran recorded four calls (two from CMV’s Vasco da Gama and two by Birka Stockholm) carrying 4,617 transit guests.
In 2020, seven calls are scheduled to Mukran and two to Sassnitz City Harbour, bringing the expected total number of guests up to some 8,300.
Apart from CMV and Birka (which will both return to Sassnitz/Mukran), Phoenix Reisen has added the destination to its portfolio with Artania and Deutschland adding two calls at Sassnitz.
Among several new touristic highlights around this destination is the NVA Museum at Prora, due to open on April 1,2020, which features the history of the armed forms of former German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
Sassnitz/Mukran aims to strengthen its position including through the recently established ‘Destination Rügen – Cruise & Ferry Network’ association.
Catering for the upmarket sector Lübeck- Travemünde, which received 5,607 passengers from 14 calls during 2019. Five calls with 721 passengers accounted for turnarounds. Forecasts from port operator Luebecker Hafen expect 13 calls carrying about 7,500 passengers in 2020 season, including maiden visits of Le Bellot, Evrima and Insignia.
Returning to Germany’s hubs, Kiel recorded good growth last year, totalling 175 calls carrying 803,061 passengers (compared to 169 calls and 598,652 passengers in 2018). Turnarounds represented 93%.
This year, Kiel is expecting 198 calls and around 880,000 passengers in a longer season running from March 27 until December 21. Most frequent visitors will be AIDA Cruises (accounting for 57 calls from four ships), TUI Cruises (accounting for 32 calls from four ships) and MSC which,

after a lengthy break, again bases two ships at Kiel.
MSC Meraviglia and MSC Splendida account for 37 calls which will exclusively be handled at Cruise Berth No. 1 in the Ostuferhafen Docks.
Costa will operate ten itineraries out of Kiel with Costa Favolosa (replacing Costa Pacifica), but aims to step up its presence significantly with a second ship in 2021.
A peak of the annual cruise traffic will, as always, be reached during the ‘Kieler Woche’ festivities in June with 21 calls scheduled.
As a highlight (and important milestone for Kiel), the second terminal building at Ostseekai will finally be inaugurated on March 4, 2020.
Combining the inauguration with the Chamber’s reception (an annual highlight in Kiel’s business life) was certainly a both innovative and clever move, outlining the broad importance of cruise tourism for all parts of the Kiel region’s economy.

operation this season. Once the plant is fully operational, it will provide shore power to 70 cruise ship calls per year, always supplying one cruise ship plus one of the Stena-ferries calling Kiel from Gothenburg simultaneously. Kiel’s strategic vision is to cover 60% of the power required by ships in port through cold ironing. In addition, the port will start handling LNG-fuelled cruise ships in 2021, when AIDAcosma is scheduled to make her maiden call.
As Germany’s ultimate hub, Rostock closed the 2019 cruise season with about 634,000 passengers handled upon 196 calls, including 272,000 transit passengers – traditionally, Rostock has a particularly strong foothold in this segment, as also the remarkable share of 98,000 guests from the US received during 2019 reflects. 92 calls accounted for full or partial turnarounds.
During 2020, Rostock expects 207 calls including maiden visits of Celebrity Apex, Costa Fascinosa, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Jade, Sky Princess and Spirit of Discovery. Just like in Kiel, AIDA is going to be the most frequent user, accounting for 46 (turnaround) calls. Pullmantur returns to Rostock for seven turnarounds of Monarch, while Costa, MSC and Princess Cruises have scheduled 46 partial turnarounds. The cruise port infrastructure at Rostock- Warnemünde is going to make a big leap this spring as the new ‘Warnemünde Cruise Center 8’ will become operational, shortly before also Warnemünde’s new station is going to be re-inaugurated during May after its through conversion and upgrade.
This investment will massively improve the access for those (mostly turnaround passengers) travelling by train. Later in the summer, Rostock’s new cold ironing plant for cruise ships is going to start trial operation.
