Preparation activities are on-going to award the building of both a multipurpose passenger station and a new dedicated cruise terminal. In late December 2019, the Port Authority selected a joint proposal of Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises to manage the cruise activities and infrastructure in all the Western Sicily’s ports authority system, with a plan to boost cruise traffic up to 1.5m in five years. Trapani and Porto Empedocle are also undergoing infrastructure enhancements.


Heading the new Strait Port Authority including Milazzo and Reggio Calabria as cruise ports, Messina continues grow its cruise traffic (+13,5% vs 2018) to 422,732 passengers and 170 calls for 2019 by 20 cruise companies, a figure which is expected to increase by 15% to 486,318 passengers and 181 calls (+6,5%) with the addition of TUI Cruises, MSC Cruises, Marella Cruises and Carnival among others.


In 1H 2020, the Port Authority will award the contract for the new 1,800sq mtr cruise terminal expected to be ready by end 2021, while it is working to lengthen the current cruise quay to 650mtr and add a new 300mtr long one. In the meantime, the Port Authority is planning terminal and small tender pier for anchoring cruise ships at Milazzo port principally servicing the Eolie islands.


Cagliari regsitered a traffic reduction with 290,334 passengers (-28% vs 2018) and

103 ship calls (-26,4% vs 2018) while it is expecting to increase again this year to 302,460 and 99 calls thanks to Costa Smeralda’s arrival and MSC Fantasia. The Cagliari Cruise Port cruise operating company with Global Ports Holding (GPH) shareholder majority has invested in the terminal and crew area but the infrastructure requires enhancements to accommodate two new-generation cruise ships, to be approved and supported by the Sardinia Ports Network Authority also including Olbia, Oristano, Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, Santa Teresa and Portovesme.


Heading the Eastern Sicily’s Ports Network Authority also including Augusta, Catania through the Catania Cruise Terminal company with GPH majority, welcomed a significant increment in cruise trafficsto over 208,000 passengers (+68.2% vs 2018) and 113 ship calls (+61,4% vs 2018), figures which are expected to increase to about 265,000 passengers (+27%) in 2020.


A renewed Stazione Marittima terminal is expected to be ready soon, while a new cruise terminal and quays enhancements are in the pipeline, with the aim to becoming a home port facility also thanks to the support of the nearby Catania Fontanarossa International airport.


Heading the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Network Authority including the Sistiana destination, Trieste registered a strong increment in 2019, with 190,960 passengers (+177,5% vs 2018) and a 2020 forecast of 217,000.


Trieste Terminal Passeggeri (TTP) cruise managing company cruise controlled by TAMI private company with Costa Cruises, MSC Cruise and Generali majority) in addition to local Port Authority, is looking to further extended the current two available quays to accommodate larger cruise ships.


Ancona port, heading the Central Adriatic Sea Port Network authority, welcomed record cruise traffic with 100,109 passengers (+49% vs 2018). Last July, the local authorities have approved the plan for a new dedicated pier and cruise terminal which will further boost the port appeal.


Salerno has also registered a 34.04% increment to 97,703 passengers in 2019, which is expected to further increase in 2020 as dredging activities are on-going to accommodate larger cruise ships at the Molo Manfredi with the Zaha Hadid architect- designed cruise terminal by the new Salerno Terminal Passeggeri company.


Among the smaller ports, Trapani registered 29,389 passengers and 50 ship calls last year, forecasted to increase to 34,131 passengers and 43 calls in 2020, while Marina di Carrara got a jump to 26,415 passengers with positive figures also for Portoferraio as well as Taranto.


The latter will see a significant boost in 2020 with 16,000 passengers and 12 calls and a new cruise terminal to be ready by mid-2020 which GPH has proposed to manage, an offer under evaluation by the local Port Authority.
