At Aberdeen, major investment in a harbour extension remains a priority.


John McGuigan, operations manager of Aberdeen Harbour Board, says Aberdeen’s cruise offer will be transformed with the opening of the £350m harbour extension. Phased improvements are due to come on stream from 2021.


In the meantime, around 3,700 cruise passengers are expected through Aberdeen this year.


‘We are thrilled to see even more enjoying the tourist sites on offer around the North East of Scotland,’ he adds.


South Harbour will be able to accommodate vessels of up to 300mtr in length, with a maximum beam of 45mtr in water depths of up to 15mtr.


Dundee is scheduled to welcome 11 calls in 2020, bringing almost 16,000 passengers and crew to the city.


At Inverness – styled as the City of the Highlands – eight expedition cruise ships are booked to call in 2020 with disembarking guests set to receive traditional Highland welcomes, including whisky tasting.

the most of the location’s connectivity. Cruise facilities are less than 20 minutes from an airport and five minutes from railway connections.


Elsewhere, at Invergordon on Cromarty Firth, 104 ships are scheduled in 2020 bringing a 10% increase in passenger volumes compared to 2019. The calendar includes nine maiden calls.


A programme of investment in facilities, including a new berth, is due to continue.


As the main port of northern mainland of Scotland, Scrabster, is a regular port of call for cruise ships.


There are 13 calls scheduled for 2020, with visiting ships bearing 6,950 passengers. An £18m development plan is under consideration including provision of a 250mtr berth at 9mtr chart datum.


At Kirkwall, the main cruise hub for Orkney Islands, 160 vessel calls are scheduled this year, making the Islands one of the UK’s most popular cruise call destinations.


For Lerwick, the main cruise port in Shetland Islands, 2020 is set to see 105 cruise ships call, carrying an estimated 92,000 passengers.


The 2020 season will include a larger number of mid-sized vessels compared with 2019.


Melanie Henderson, Lerwick Port Authority’s cruise & marketing manager, said: ‘The signs are very positive for growth again next year with an encouraging number of cruise lines scheduling repeat calls in the season and three new cruise lines visiting for the first time – Carnival, Mystic and TUI.’


At Clydeport, Greenock for Glasgow, a £19m investment in a new cruise berth and terminal is nearing completion and is scheduled to be operational this summer.


The berth can accommodate the longest vessels in service and increases the port’s cruise capacity.


83 ships are booked in 2020, up from 76 in 2019 and bringing more than 180,000 guests (up from 140,000 last year).


The Isle of Man will welcome a total of 33 ships in the 2020 season, disembarking 9,500 passengers.


The Irish Sea island continues to focus on providing an excellent reception and shoreside welcome. The Cruise Isle of Man team has created some new tours which embrace the Island’s position as a UNESCO Biosphere Region along with a focus on golfing tours with the Isle of Man home to eight golf courses including the links at Castletown which is ranked in the top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland.


The City of Belfast and Northern Ireland are preparing to cater for an estimated 315,000 cruise visitors in 200, up 15% on 2019.


The figures are headlined by Cruise Belfast, the joint marketing initiative between Belfast Harbour and Visit Belfast which promotes the city as an international cruise destination.
