PORTS Livorno

In February 2020, the Port Authority included the new cruise terminal project in its three-year planning programme with a planned investment of €80m of which circa €45m to be provided by the cruise company.

Dredging plans to accommodate the largest cruise ships are in place for completion around 2023, and funding also for the renewal and lengthening to accommodate the largest cruise ships on the eastern pier of Stazioni Marittime cruise terminal, further boosting its long-term capabilities.

MSC Cruises has also expressed interest in a luxury cruise terminal on the city waterfront.

Livorno registered a slight increment compared to 2018 with 832,121 passengers and 379 ship calls in 2019, after the majority share of Port Livorno 2000, the operating company for both cruise and ferry was acquired last May by Livorno Terminals, a company held by Onorato (with the majority) and Aponte groups. Livorno port is however expected to reach 897,720 passengers and 377 ship calls in 2020.

Heading the Eastern Ligurian Sea Ports Network Authority including Marina di Carrara port, La Spezia reached 601,441 passengers (+34% vs 2018) and 143 calls in 2019.

The end of 2019 saw the establishment of Spezia & Carrara Cruise Terminal (SCCT) company with Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises as equal shareholders, managing cruise operation under a public-private project financing tender to fund and operate a new cruise terminal with a €41m investment on the newly-built and dedicated quay with two berths on the city waterfront.

Currently cruise berthing operations are managed on another quay waiting for the area to accommodate the new terminal and quay to be freed by a commercial operator. La Spezia offers access to Golfo dei Poeti with Porto Venere and Lerici and the nearby Cinque Terre up to Firenze.

The Southern Adriatic Sea’s Ports Network including Bari, Brindisi, Manfredonia, Barletta and Monopoli, is increasing its business. Bari reached 674,765 passengers (+32% vs 2018) and 234 calls and is

expected to slightly rise to just under 700,000 passengers and 240 calls in 2020.

With a circa €5m investment, the Port Authority is currently working on a new cruise terminal of 3,200sq mtr which is planned to be ready in Q1 2021. Together with the Puglia Region, the Port Authority is eying a second dedicated cruise terminal with capability to handle five latest generation cruise ships.

Both the Western Ligurian Sea Port Network Authority and Costa Cruises have invested in Savona port to welcome Costa Smeralda, the first fully-powered LNG ship of the Genoa-based group, which began operations from last December. While these important activities for the future of Savona

port developments limited cruise ship traffic to 669,477 passengers and 154 calls in 2019, 900,000 passengers are projected for this year.

Palermo dipped slightly to 501,281 passengers and 160 calls due to important infrastructural works including enhanced cruise facilities in 2019. Heading the Western Sicily’s ports authority system, also including Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Termini Imerese, Palermo is at the heart of a ports network’s cruise development programme, with on-going dredging activities.

The renewal of Palermo’s Stazione Marittima on Vittorio Veneto quay is expected to be concluded in 1Q 2021, together with added dolphins to accommodate two 330-350mtr
