LNG-powered MSC Europa set to debut in 2022
Taking on the world
Construction has begun on MSC Europa at Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Seatrade has a sneak peek at the design concepts for MSC Cruises’ first World class ship.
T
he Meraviglia class and Seaside class marked a new era in ship design for MSC Cruises. The Meraviglia class was designed as the ship for all seasons, rich in features with the iconic promenade acting as the heart of the ship and its social hub, bringing guests together inside the ship, whilst the Seaside class, renowned for its Miami beach-condo aft was designed to bring guests to the outer decks, to enjoy the ocean views and outdoor spaces.
‘With the design of the MSC World class we are looking to take ship design and the guest experience to another level,’ comments Ioanna Kyriakou, MSC Cruises’ lead architect working on the design of the new ship.
‘Whilst every ship we design needs to be future-proof and still relevant 20 years from now, the MSC World class ships are our most futuristic yet,’ she said, adding, ‘And for us the future of cruising is inherently linked with environmental stewardship. Not only will this be the largest ship we have built but

it will be our fi rst LNG fuelled cruise vessel featuring the very latest advanced environmental technologies, helping us to take a signifi cant step forward with our vision for zero emissions operations.’
The shape of the ship is truly distinctive, unlike anything at sea today, claims the Geneva-HQ’d cruise line.
The ship’s graceful lines resemble the shape of an arrow that emphasises the 333mtr length and 47mtr beam, whilst the ship’s plumb bow, vertically positioned at a 90-degree angle has been designed to enhance guest comfort by improving stability and hydrodynamics.
The ‘y’ shaped aft will feature an impressive 90mtr-long promenade, half open and half covered, which will off er panoramic sea views and increase the proportion of balcony cabins with a new type of
‘courtyard’ balcony cabin overlooking the promenade.

concepts based on a massive volumetric scale and will have a very contemporary look and feel,’ Kyriakou reveals.
Commenting on MSC Europa’s design concept Trevor Young, vp newbuilding added, ‘The cruise guest of the future is a world traveller looking for experiences that transcend borders and this has informed our thinking with World class. This is a signifi cant step-change for us as whilst we are still inspired by our European heritage, we have introduced globally-inspired design – think ultramodern urban metropolis with a timeless design. But we have also had a lot of fun with the design of this ship and the attention to detail with the diff erent little touches and surprising features will really wow our guests.’
The increased size of the MSC World class ships has enabled architects to create completely distinct zones or neighbourhoods, each with their own ambience and experience, from a tranquil zen zone for adults to a lively partially open promenade with entertainment, shops and bars, and a distinct family zone that houses all the kids facilities – literally a world of diff erent experiences.
