Steripower – a specialist in disinfection devices – launched its newest innovation, a plastic free solution for the cruise industry at the beginning of this year. 2020 Steripower supplies an entirely new type of reusable aluminum packaging. It is certified for onboard storage in the regular provision area and safe to be shipped even on passenger and


cargo planes.


The product is available globally with the company’s partners in the US (Florida) and Asia (Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong). Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady and Lindblad Expedition’s National Geographic Endurance – both delivered in Q1, 2020 – feature this solution.


Wärtsilä scrubber solution for Norwegian pair


Wärtsilä will supply customised hybrid scrubber system packages to Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway enabling them to be in compliance with IMO sulphur restriction legislation. Customisation of the system was required in order to meet the ships’ restricted space availability, noted Wärtsilä. ‘Obviously not all installations are the same and there is no single system that fits all applications. Having the flexibility to adjust the design to meet the customer’s specific needs is an important value-adding feature of our offering,’ says Sigurd Jenssen, director,


exhaust gas cleaning, Wärtsilä Marine. ‘We previously worked with Wärtsilä and are familiar with the quality and reliability of the group’s solutions,’ said Giovanni Canu, vp, special projects and operational support at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2020. For the past seven years, Wärtsilä has had an engine maintenance agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line, and its four newbuilds, currently under construction, will be fitted with Wärtsilä engines and scrubber systems.


The Band: Virgin Voyages’ wearable technology

Virgin Voyages’ Sailors (passengers) on Scarlet Lady will sport The Band – a sleek wearable technology made from recycled ocean plastic that will allow them to access their cabins, serve as a room key; board the ship with ease; make onboard purchases and pay for the drinks tab; game at the casino and a host of other things. The Band is a partnership with BIONIC Yarn, a material engineering company committed to addressing plastic pollution in marine and coastal environments.


SKYPRO supplying more sustainable uniforms


The ceo of a supplier of uniforms, shoes and uniform management solutions to the travel industry, believes whilst cruise lines are making considerable efforts to reduce or offset their carbon emissions they may be missing a trick with crew uniforms. ‘Major cruise lines employ approximately 30,000 crew wearing an average of 20 pieces of uniform and accessories each,’ says Jorge Pinto ceo of SKYPRO which lists among its clients Qatar Airways, Virgin Voyages and Mystic Cruises.

In business for over 15 years, Portuguese- based SKYPRO has identified ways of supplying more sustainable uniforms ranging from the use of plastic-alternative fabrics and materials to an ordering portal. According to Pinto, most jacket linings are made from non-biodegradable synthetic polyester, buttons from plastic, and although leather is a bi-product of the food industry the tanning process includes the use of over 250 chemicals which in turn could end up in the water supply.


SKYPRO is able to produce uniforms using a number of alternative, more sustainable materials, he points out. All SKYPRO fabrics are Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certified, meaning threads, buttons and other accessories have been tested for harmful substances.
