talian ports recorded over 12.2m passengers and 4,900 ship calls last year and according to forward projections was shaping up to surpass those numbers this year. However, COVID-19 is going to have an impact on the fi nal outcome.


According to a report produced by Risposte Turismo research and consulting company last year, Italy was expected to welcome 13.08m passengers (+ 6.7& vs 2019) and 4,998 ship calls (up 1.4% vs 2019). That was before Itgalinas had their movements restricted until early April.


‘Coronavirus issues will impact Italy cruise traffi c this year and more generally the Mediterranean, including Chinese cruise tourists coming to the region (representing 0.7% of the 2.35m Chinese source market) and late bookings and cancellations,’ said Francesco di Cesare, president of Risposte Turismo.


From an infrastructural point of view, ‘2020 will be a particularly interesting year, with projects in numerous ports including Palermo, Messina, Catania and La Spezia,’ noted di Cesare.


Pending fi nal decisions two projects are


planned on the Adriatic coast: a new cruise terminal in Ancona (2025) at Molo Clementino and in Trieste a quay extension, he revealed.


Civitavecchia reached a new record with 2.65m passengers (+8,3% vs 2018) and 800 ship calls last year. Managed by Roma Cruise Terminal (RCT) the port passed one million homeport passengers for the fi rst time whilst maintaining its leading role as the top Italian port for transit calls at around 1.5m.


Costa Cruises, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean are equal shareholders and RCT is further enhancing gangways at the Amerigo Vespucci cruise terminal to better service the largest cruise ships. Expecting to reach a new 2.79 million passengers record in 2020 (pre-Coronavirus prediction), Civitavecchia heads the Tyrrhenian Sea’s central-northern port authority also including Fiumicino and Gaeta ports.


Stazione Marittima’s Venezia Terminal Passeggeri (VTP)-managed cruise terminal registered a slight increment (2.5%) compared to 2018, reaching 1.61m passengers and 497 calls. With the VTP company controlled by Costa, MSC, Royal Caribbean and Global Ports Holding (GPH), Venice is the leading Italian


homeport with over 1.39m in 2019.


Heading the Central Thyrrenian Sea’s Port Authority, including Salerno e Castellammare di Stabia, Naples registered 1.35m passengers and 456 ship calls in 2019 with put it in third place in the national ranking.


Managed by Terminal Napoli owned by Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruise, MSC Cruises, Marinvest and Alilauro, Naples’ Stazione Marittima has added a new hotel, congress centre and cruise terminal.


As part of the Western Thyrrenian Sea’s Port Authority also including Savona, Genoa port is looking to long-term developments. Stazioni Marittime cruise terminal reached 1.34m passengers (+34% vs 2018) and 281 ship calls in 2019, with the third homeport traffi c ranking at national level with 711,500 passengers thanks to the increased commitment of MSC Cruises also expected for 2020, taking Genoa port to 1.39m passengers this year, as well as the return of Costa Cruises’ ships.


The latter has reaffi rmed its willingness for local investments not only for a new cruise terminal within a 2025-year timeframe but also new headquarters.
