Editor’s Desk
Unprecedented times
As I write, Italy is in lock down with some 60m people told to stay at home, the US State Department has posted an advisory that cautions against cruise travel and coronavirus (COVID-19)-hit cruise ships are being held in quarantine.
COVID-19, which surfaced in China late last year, has brought disruption and cause for concern across the globe as it has spread to over 90 countries.

First major manifestation in the cruise sector was in Asia in February resulting in cancelled cruises, hasty redeployments, ships taken out of service, quarantined ships and denials of entry at certain ports.
Cruising found itself the poster child for the virus.
In response, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) was quick to issue guidelines ranging from members denying boarding to all persons who have travelled from, visited or transited via airports in key effected areas, to the introduction of enhanced screening, among a list of wide ranging protocols.
By March the above scenario had shifted beyond Asia, with the Mediterranean and US the current centre stages. Each day brings new updates.
This is a rapidly changing environment and the cruise industry is facing its toughest challenge in the last 50 years.
I hope you are reading this issue as the global cruise industry gathers in Miami for the annual Seatrade Cruise Global but with such a fluid situation you may not – instead you may be reading it at your desk, in your home or a digital version.
As the six week countdown to the show starts, Seatrade is moving forward with plans to host the event as scheduled in mid-April. We believe that this event remains the opportunity for the global cruising community to meet as one and work through challenges and this becomes even more relevant in times of concern.
Whatever the outcome we also know the cruise industry is resilient – it will recover from the current crisis and will bounce back stronger.
Seatrade has been engaging with the industry for 50 years and has witnessed challenging times such as the Gulf War, 9/11, SARS, MERS, norovirus, Legionnaires disease, Black Monday 1987, to name a few.
The cruise community has always responded quickly to such challenges in a calm and effective manner and ridden out the storm on so many occasions and COVID-19 will not be an exception.
Coronavirus latest Due to the fast-changing pace of events, apart from the Asia market report in this issue, the decision was taken to focus coronavirus coverage for now, on
Seatrade-Cruise.com, which is continuously updated to provide the latest daily information.
