The ballast water management convention (BWMC) officially came into force last year and the clear leader for reacting is the cruise market as Samantha Fisk reports.

s expected, many of the predictions for the market are now starting to become a reality as shipowners race


to install equipment to be in compliance with the regulations. Factors such as slots in shipyards, equipment manufacturing turnaround times and also the regulations themselves are all playing a part in how the market adopts the equipment.


One of the key questions has been about the technology itself. Over the previous years leading up the ratification of the ballast water management convention questions have been raised about the longevity of the technology and also the technology itself, whether filters would cope with high particle waters which saw some competitors falling to the wayside.


Mark Riggio, Hyde Marine comments about recent developments in the market that: ‘The ballast water market is definitely heating up, with a significant increase in sales and deliveries in 2019 over past years.’


However, it now seems that trends in the market are starting to answer the questions that shipowners have been asking. The clear leader for reacting to the BWMC is the cruise market that has been actively installing systems onboard.

treatment systems. They are far ahead of other sectors in shipping as far as outfitting themselves with this equipment and identifying the key manufacturers that couple the best treatment with seamless integration,’ says Riggio.


Xavier Deval


The French ballast water treatment company Bio-C is also seeing more uptake in this market, after developing a product specifically for the cruise ship industry. ‘We have


seen our turnover double this year for Bio-C and we expect to see it double again in the next year,’ comments Xavier Deval, business director, Bio-UV.


The company also notes that there is a trend in the cruise market for UV treatment system being the popular choice for many, ‘more than 80% of the market opt for UV,’ adds Deval.
